Swing away spare wheel carrier
Can anyone help me with the positioning of the wheel plate that is fixed to the rear door? This is what the piston is attached to which is then attached to the swing arm. It came with instructions from Britpart but there's no way of knowing how to position the wheel plate on the door. I don't want to be drilling holes all over the new door I've just fitted. Cheers.

Which type of wheel carrier have you got? I fitted an military surplus Mantec to my 110 and manufactured a plate that mounts onto the six original spare wheel carrier holes on the rear door, then I welded the Mantec wheel plate to that. 2003 Defender 110 TD5 SW

I think it's Britpart - at least that's the branding on the box. The wheelplate has pre-drilled holes to suit all Defender/Series variants. Mine's a 1987 Defender but I replaced the original safari door with a new one at the weekend, so there are no corresponding holes to line up the wheelplate. I'm thinking I may have to put the swing arm on first then offer it up to the wheelplate held against the door to mark where the holes need to go. I just wondered if anyone had some more detailed instructions/measurements I could refer to than those supplied in the box.

Can you not measure the holes on your old door? Darren

Checked that. They don't correspond with any of the holes on the wheelplate either!

There are some instructions here but sadly no measurements to assist.

https://www.paddockspares.com/downloads/pm132.pdf

Is your new door the later one piece type? If so then there should be holes on the inner frame that would correspond, they certainly did on mine. I used them as a guide to drill pilot holes from inside then drilled these holes larger from the outside inwards.

If you would like some measurements then let me know, I have the same carrier as the one in the instructions. 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

Hmm, strange. I've got one of thee carriers in a box in the garage, in my project queue. I'll take a look at the plate later. If the holes line up with the standard carrier on my 110 (I hope it does!) then I could measure those for you. Darren

I have that same carrier too, with the same instructions. However, the door mounting plate is different to the one shown and I suspect it's been amended to match the later wheel carrier holes. Darren

It's chucking it down so I'm not going to the shed to check until it stops. Thanks for all the advice. I'll take measurements if anyone has them. I'll end going for a combination of offering up and measuring off. Nothing is ever straightforward!

What does the inner frame of your new door look like? Does it not have the six holes?
I can measure rough locations of those if required 2003 Defender 110 TD5 SW

This was the back of my old one, you can see the reinforcement where the wheel carrier bolts.

Sorry pic didn't attach last time. My door looks nothing like yours. Having said that the old one I took off didn't look like yours either.

Ok, earlier type door, mine's a 2003. Looking at where the smaller plate is on my rear door the holes on it should go through the central vertical frames on your door. 2003 Defender 110 TD5 SW
