Are you sure it’s not an m10 full of crud? I’d try scraping at it with a metal pick. Ray My build thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic17615.html |

Re the bolt being full of crud - that's what my daughter said when I told her the socket bit wouldn't fit.
She was helping by pressing the brake pedal whist I undid the bolts. I have cleaned it out properly and it is definitely a smaller socket job. Anyway, when the 9mm bit arrives I will know for sure. I believe it was a boot that was replaced by my local VW indie some time ago, so perhaps he lost the original and just bunged in what he had lying around. I do believe the car manufacturers keep using more and more exotic bolt heads to deter DIYers. |

Claim is they use these exotic bolt heads to achieve greater torque when fastening but from what I have seen, most could be replaced with a standard hex head bolt. |

Can't remember what the tensile strengths do with Torx bolts but if you want a 10.9 sorry 12.9 spec bolt it'll almost certainly be a cap-head bolt not a hex-head because of the design of the head you can't get the torque required. Not so much how much you can put on but I think the spec for the shape of the head introduces some sharp edges which affect clamping force. Ed

Just came across this which denotes there are other reasons too:

yeah i have seen them been replaced with standard bolts, for ease and sometimes i think tricky bolts like that can be a bit of a one shot deal too. Harder to re use them depending on where they are on the car. The rover metro i had, only had tricky bolts on the dash, and that was it. The reason for torx is usually for ease of assembly at the factory. A torx head is much easier and quicker to locate on the driver than a hex head. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Conversely in my previous job where we built high end software defined radios Torx were the preference because everything else was cheese headed when you're dealing with sub M5 bolts. Ed

Just had a similar situation removing the Fire and Ice side steps, M8 bolts and nuts, the ones with the webbing instead of straight faces, M8 socket and spanner to small M9 to big, then I find another socket set with the E sockets no luck with them either. Yesterday removed sills and all prepared to do battle with the angle grinder with thin cutting disk I manage to push all my stock of discs down the back of the workbench I then have to pull out very old tool box issued in 1968 and I find two ICI spanners on the top, they look about the right size so I give them a try and low and behold they fit, eight rusted bolts out in 20 minutes. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
