Mmmm, and how objective will it be? It’s bound to be 90% fantastic alongside a minor criticism of some facet of design. Any of the older generation remember Ray Hutton? I’m biased but he was a decent motoring journalist.

All motoring reviews are biased to a degree, but it’s a welcome break from everything else that’s happening. We’ll all get a chance to find out for ourselves at some point.

I may be an old cynic, no correction I am an old cynic, but if you were handed an all expenses paid trip to Namibia to test drive the new Defender, wined and dined at JLR's expense, would you give it a bad report? You may have some negative views on certain aspects but overall you're going to give it the thumbs up. You don't bite the hand that feeds you expensive freebies. Defender 90XS SW

Decent motoring journalism has declined along with the circulation of print magazines. The publications that remain are so beholden to advertisers to survive, and dependent on manufacturers to give them cars to test, that they dare not be overly critical. I'm not saying the new Defender will be deserving of harsh criticism, I hope it is good, just an observation about the mags. The same is even more applicable to most YouTube reviewers. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Explode the picture/ zoom in and magnify it - does that car have odd tyres on the front - RH looks like an MT and the LH has a different tread pattern.......
Any bets it’s going to be What Car? Mag’s SUV of the year and car of the year 2020 and Autocar and AutoExpress will fallow suit? Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

Definitely looks like there’s two different tread patterns.

Yup, definitely different. Probably got a flat when the electronics misjudged something fully automatically... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Or one tyre just has more mud in the tread?

Wow ~ 3 days on a 5* holiday and that's all he writes? The first 1/3rd is just a re-hash of LR marketing blurb, then a list of the parts fitted, an inaccurate description of "raised air intakes for wading rivers", and then conclusions like "the Defender is more fun and involving on a winding B-road than its posher brothers" based on less then 10km of road driving on what I'm sure will not have been a winding B road.

@Supacat.... I work in the motorcycle industry... Having been on MANY product launches with Jurno's, It's basically a free holiday for them. They grab the PR Blurb and generally re-hash it.... Then a quick spin in our case around a race track in sunny Spain, Lunch, a few more laps and then back to the hotel for dinner.... They are usually surrounded by the PR Crew at all times...
So any press release is generally an extension of the PR arm of the manufacturer... Until we get to drive it, We can't really make any judgements... However, As it's basically a D5 with a body kit and some changes to the software... Don't expect anything amazing Just my 2p It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |

I think the new truck looks great, but its what is under the skin that counts..
a few points to ponder ... 1. what are your thoughts about putting complex electronics in a utilitarian vehicle? 2. Historically have JLR been any good at designing/testing and fitting complex electronics in vehicles? 3. Spline shafts / build consistency? 4. "they all do that sir" - enough said 5. do the key demographic for these vehicles (Farmers, Services etc) have £80k to spend on a vehicle 6. build quality .. (not withstanding UK technicians vs whereever they are being made now) I'd like one but I'll wait for version 1.1 as I don't want to be an extended JLR tester my 2p .. |
