I had the 1.2 t/box and went back to a 1.4 t/box.
I found around town it was OK, but dragging cars through a forest or on race tracks on the back of the Harvey I was constantly up and down the box. Much better for me with a 1.4 box. Depends on the usage I guess. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Borrow a set of 33" tyres and run around on them for a bit. Its approx same ratio change. Would give you a good idea of affect of fitting 1.2 box without the agro. Lots of disco2 boxes dont have diff lock which if your towing could have impact even if not doing any off road. Cheers

That assumes I have a friend with a spare set of 33" tyres!

possibly i was just trying to give you options before taking the t box off and replacing it.
thought it might prompt someone in your area to offer. buy one and try it, what is it 3.5hrs to change it? stock td5 towing on any hills and i would of thought 1.4 would be better suited. Ashcrfot 1.3? Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Ashcroft 1.3 does look like a good compromise, just again added cost! If I'm going to go down the line of a refurb, I'd love to get a centre ARB but they aren't cheap!

i fail to see the point of a centre ATB when a def LT230 has the option to lock. in an axle maybe but in the T box? Cheers

Can confirm that a standard Td5 110 with 1.2 transfer does make towing harder. You are indeed dropping 5th to 4th to maintain 60mph. Can only imagine the issue being worse with the V8 5th gear. I have however had mine remapped by Td5inside and she’s spot on now, giving the low down torque to keep pulling.

I had 1,2 transfer box on Discovery 2 with 238/85/R16 tyres (32"), and it was hard to start moving on first high gear, without play with clutch. When moving, remapped TD5 had enough power to move our bit heavy (like 3200 kg) travel car. When towing, first move was on low gear, and than switch to high with car still moving.
After change of diff gearing from standard 3,54 to 3,8 it is now much better. With 130 TD5 and stock 1,4 transfer box, it is nice to drive also with 1,5 ton loaded. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo ![]() |

I have a 1.2 transfer box on my stock 90 and I don’t tow. It’s great for me and what I do but I wouldn’t want to tow anything heavy with it, it wouldn’t struggle to hold its revs on long motorway uphills I imagine.

I always get to this point where I think about giving a 1.2 box a go and never do... because of all of these negatives I read... 1.3 Ashcroft at some point when I've got some spare coins... sounds like the ideal balance.

You say you've got a high 5th, now I'd say a TD5 110 as standard on a 1.4 is quite revvy in 5th at 70, it cruises comfortably and economically at nearer 60, so now you've put in a high 5th, what would you say its comfortable speed is?

65-70 is my happy place, It can be pushed to 80 but it does get loud.

Some people seem to be big fans of the drivability and driveline backlash improvement mostly. |

It's also more robust than the stock unit, and a new ATB from Ashcroft is a lot cheaper than a new centre diff from LR (which is over£1600 as I recall).
