United Kingdom 2001 Defender 90 Td5 SW Alveston Red
Sorry to ask but ———
Its with a very sad heart and a tear that I’m contemplating having to sell my Landy 😢
Only for the reason I’m now spending £60 a week on fuel to commute and it’s crippling me

The sensible thing is to buy a faceless super eco diesel of some sort,
But I have had the 90 for about 18 years now and some proper adventures have been had,

Anyhow IF I do sell it what’s its worth ?
51 plate csw 90 rear seats removed and made way for stack n store storage,
170k but more oil changes than you can shake a dip stick at , at least 4 times a year

Generally ok, bit of corrosion around the windscreen frame,
I fitted a new D44 rear cross member a year or so ago , rear of the chassis never welded,

Heated screen / Mirrors
I was thinking £6k

Seen some for more and and some for less

Taken loads of surplus crap / weight out the car and roof rack off etc in the desperate hope of making the fuel stretch a bit,

Any ideas on any of the above folks ?

Thanks in advance

Can't help you with a valuation I'm afraid but make sure you account for depreciation with your choice of replacement. Included it may well cost more than the running costs of your Defender. WARNING.

I doubt any Defender that is looked after and has a big MOT is worth as little as 6 grand to be honest.

Remember that anything you buy will do more miles, per gallon, but will be depreciating, the Defender is smiles per miles and be going up in value, or certainly won’t be depreciating.

Or is it my rose tinted glasses.

I’m filling mine with £100 worth a week and doing 700 miles to and from work but it’s worth it for the smiles per gallon.

As others have said, don’t be lured into false economy. Do some basic maths. Work out the full cost of running the 90 per year (fuel, self-servicing, wear and tear etc) and then look at what replacement you could get for your £6-8k, and do the same again. But, the 90 in the condition you say it is in, will likely depreciate very, very little if at all, whereas you might find the ‘economical’ diesel depreciates a lot more. Clearly depreciation is not cash pouring out of your pocket on a weekly basis, but it will matter when you sell, and unlike the Defender, you’re unlikely to keep (or want to keep) a Corolla or Focus forever. So you WILL eventually sell, and you WILL lose money and it may not be far off what your total per year is for the Defender. Indeed it may be more. For info, here’s some industry averages for car depreciation in the UK:

Year 1: 15-35% depreciation. 65-85% of original value.
Year 3: 40-60% depreciation. 40-65% of original value.
Year 5: 60-70% depreciation. 30-40% of original value.
Year 8-10: 80% depreciation. 20% of original value.

So, do some basic numbers and see, in real terms, per year (or maybe over 3-4 years that you’d keep a boring car) and see just where you stand. Might not be as bad as you think.

If it is, I’d suggest most of us on here would agree that moving house and reducing your weekly commute, would be a more than worthwhile sacrifice to make to keep the Def. Or find a patch of grass (like those in the middle of a roundabout), where you can pitch a tent and stay during the week, so you only commute on Monday morning and Friday evening. If that leads to divorce, your kids forgetting what you look like or the cat disowning you, so what. You keep the 90. Bonzer. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Had a similar situation dropped on me recently, decided I didn't want to use my 110 to commute. Bought a polo for £1500. Okay it needed a few little jobs doing but on a run it's getting double what the 110 could in mpg, and I'm not clocking up miles in the 110 or wearing it out. The VW may wellness worth very little when I come to sell ot on but it will have saved plenty of miles on my 110 so it was worth the expense for that.
If you must use the 90 then a set of road biased tyres will make a big difference to fuel economy. 2011 110 USW

As others have said buy a cheapo diesel hatch that has low insurance, good mpg, easy and cheap to maintain and keep the Defender for weekends and fun. Defender 90XS SW

£6k is too cheap. You can always go down, but you can't come up.

But I'm with everyone else. IF you sold it, you could never find another good one for that much.

Sorn it and buy a £500 runaround. New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

Hi all,
Thanks for all your thoughts and comments,
Much as a try I just can’t place an advert for the 90 , it genuinely brings a tear to the corner of my eye of life with out her Sad

So I’ve been shredding weight and wind catchers like roof rack light bars etc, spare parts that have probably covered over 100k with our seeing light of day Rolling with laughter and yep - I know next trip I’ll need Um Thumbs Up but as I’m mostly localish and have recovery cover I’ll take my chance till a long trip comes along,
I’ll check tyre pressures tomorrow and a coat of polish to make it more slippery through the wind Laughing Laughing
I can’t afford to own / run two cars sadly,
So once again I’ll say thanks to all that have chucked in there words of wisdom and confirm I still need her in my life 😍

Thanks again
