Powder coating galvanised bumpers
Can you powder coat galvanised products without any prep to the galv? Cheers

Out of interest.... how old are they?

Only mine are also Safari Equip, so are my brothers on his 130, and the coating has gone white in most places ready to peel off, and some places have flaked off of the galv. It looks much like they weren't Twashed before coating.

Mines garaged 100% of its time not in use, and my brothers is in a car port so not sure it's how they're being treated.

Am about to take them off and get them re-coated.

It can be done. I don't know if they put in any extra prep or just have the process and technique nailed, but I've seen examples (not fresh, but long term outdoor installations) at their factory and it seemed robust enough.

Thanks for the link. Looks interesting. I'll use that in my discussion with the chap that's recoating it for us.

I've only really got access to a local powdercoater, though they have done lots for us before and appear knowledgeable. I'll give them a call I think.

Seem to remember him saying "oh no, you can't coat galv....." when it came up before.

Your link begs to differ!! Thumbs Up

safari equip galv and powder coating lasts well, i have some sidesteps from them so second that. i have a galv bumper that's powder coated but the coating is coming away, i'm not sure if that's from position and wear or poor prep prior to coating 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

If you're wanting your bumper coated, this could work as an alternative to powder coating perhaps?

How old is your bumper anyway? After a year or two, as the galv loses the shine and dulls down a bit, it becomes less difficult to coat and doesn't really require t-wash.

I'd explore the paint option, I'm going to be using Jotun products on my new chassis and other bits. They don't reccomend a t-wash but suggest lightly keying the surface with a non-metallic abrasive.

They've got a great reputation amongst the oil rig / structural engineering industries. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

I painted my galv bumper. T wash, etch primer and then Upol satin black, which is holding up very well.

Buzzweld... galv in one.

Which i found out means, back to galv, after one month.

I curiously used it on a galv bumper and galv tow drop plate etc. T-washed, washed, scotchbrighted etc.
Now i’m doing it properly..ll

I won’t be using that stuff again.

Interesting, Greeni. How fresh was the galv? I haven't used that product, I was just "aware" of it's existence, although I've always been skeptical of miracle products that can cut out all the steps and do the job in one go.
