You can out-run the synchros in the r380 quite easily, which sounds like what’s happening. Is it worse when cold? Possibly a thinner gear oil can help.
A half second pause/ gear change is still pretty quick for an R380. |

All normal for a well used gearbox. Just take your time with the changes. I find it is improved by using fully synthetic gearbox oil.

Always, always pause for a millisecond in neutral when shifting gears especially when it is cold. That almost always solves all crunching of gears. The R380 is not a fast smashing gearbox. If you juts bought this truck change all fluids as soon as possible. Including brake fluid , coolant, gearbox oil (MTF 94), transfer case oil , and differentials. Last year I have changed oil from some MTF94 compatible to original MTF94 from sealed container and there was big improvement in behavior of the gearbox. So not all MTF94 oils are the same. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

It's a truck, not a Mustang! Shift up slowly with a definite pause in neutral, and double declutch down changes (up changes too if you like).
My personal opinion is that the R380 is possibly the most old fashioned and generally poor gearbox of modern times. A series 1 non-synchro box is much nicer to drive. |

I personally find they behave much better with Fuchs titan sintofluid SAE 75W-80 than MTF. Not a fan of MTF. It was great in 1996, but the world has moved on.

Hi Madtom, When you tain about original MTF94 in sealed container, are you talking about MTF bought from dealer with green Land Lover logo ? I put in mine the MTF94 from LR dealer. The LR part référence is STC9158. Please see picture. Thanks for your feedback Julien Last edited by charisme1 on 11th Jan 2020 3:29pm. Edited 2 times in total |

I found this with the 300 and the same with the TD5, they do not like been rushed up the box at all. my 300 was always notchy in second and was bit of a pig, when cold. Trying to get into second gear. It was just the way the gearbox is, the TD5 is the same too, and can be notch into 3rd if am gearing quick. Due to it been remapped. Just have to pause then change gear, Sort of roll into it.
I think I read somewhere that even a Recon R380 is the same, they are just as notchy. I don't think the RT77 is a notchy unit, as my mum never mentioned anything or even notices. Hi Procta, Many thanks for this clear reply. I think that mine was remapped before I bought it, because it can push it in high REVs on low gears when accelerating. Also, on highway, I can drive it at 130 km/h, with no problem except lots of noise and vibration. So very unpleasant, that's why I don't exceed 110 km/h. Do you know how can I be sure if it was remapped ? How can I reset it easily to return back to factory program ? Very many thanks again, Julien |

On most road vehicles gears 1 and 2 are designed to get the vehicle moving from a standing start, 3,4 and 5 if fitted are designed to build up road speed. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |
