A big intercooler with a standard map won't do much other than to bring your EGT temp down a bit and I guess help preserve the engine temps a bit.
The benefits are that with an aggressive map you can maintain safe temps while upping the fuelling above where you'd be able to with a standard intercooler. If youre getting it mapped, put on a big IC, remove the EGR valve and get rid of your cat and then have it done. It'll be night and day difference. |

Thanks, the cheapskate part of me was thinking that changing the current tired looking intercooler wont do much anyway because I do most of the driving at very low speed off road on trials and that means the intercooler probably isnt doing too much anyway as not much air is passing through it due to the low mph.
Is that logical or am I missing anything? Cheers |

I’ve spent hundreds and hundreds on intercoolers and never noticed the difference particularly. And you certainly won’t with a standard engine and slow speeds of off roading or trialing.
In your situation I would put a wanted add up in the sales section asking if anyone has a used/standard one that they don’t want Andy |

I get what you're saying, but I also don't know why you'd go for a conservative map if thats the use of the vehicle.
I'd get something that optimises the lower rev range pickup and gets that turbo attacking as aggressively as possible and as early as possible. Check out some of Jose's TD5Inside videos on youtube. It's incredible what can be done with a properly set up system and how hard a TD5 can work low down in its range. Probably not a bad start, TD5 at Ultra4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFDs9Pe2KkI |

Td5 inside do nice maps but there are others in the UK too.
![]() I get around 155 hp from my 2003 td5 I think. If I tresh it at the highway my inlet temp gets to about 65 deg Celsius with a standard intercooler. That temperature changes less the 5 deg between summer and winter. With normal offroading I hardly see high temps, Only if it really needs to work to keep my 35"simexes spinning in the mud. Even with pulling a trailler on the road it doesn't get really warm for a long time so I think a standard intercooler is good enough. I would replace it if I was you but would try to find a standard one.
