There's lots of speculation on the 'net around the circumstances that caused the chassis to bend. Excessive speed or jumping with the rented trailer attached, incorrectly modded suspension, incorrect length shock absorbers bottoming out.
But the best comment I read was: At the end of the day, sometimes you just shouldn't do dumb sh!t. |

And now a recall:
"Jeep Is Recalling Certain Manual Wranglers and Gladiators Because They Could Catch Fire" https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/a314...fire-risk/ "Have a manual Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator? Nice job, you made the correct purchase. But according to this latest recall announcement from Jeep, you might have to bring your truck back to the dealer for some repairs. According to this recall notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website, certain Wranglers and Gladiators equipped with the manual transmission option may have their clutch pressure plate overheat and fracture. The resulting debris could come in contact with ignition or fuel lines, increasing the risk of a fire. The recall notice states up to 33,237 vehicles have potentially been affected by the issue, spread across Wranglers built from 2018-2020 and Gladiators built in 2020. Jeep has yet to develop a fix, but the NHTSA says the recall is expected to begin on April 22, 2020. If you think your Jeep might be affected by the recall, head on over to to the NHTSA's website and type in your VIN. If your vehicle is affected, we recommend parking the thing until there's a fix available. Or, if you can't, go a bit easier on your transmission while on the move. You don't want to be the person stuck on the side of the highway watching your new Jeep burn to a crisp." |

LR has wiring around the engine harness that has been known to spontaneously combust and LR never even brought in a recall.
I guess that's just our risk to take now a few years down the line. Although it could be much worse, you could be a Vauxhall Zafira owner then they could be known to catch fire just sat on the drive. I wonder how LR and Jeep compare on recalls between the Wrangler JK and Defender that would be interesting reading to compare the two. Now Jeep is Chrysler Fiat group, perhaps things will go downhill there too like the Defender did after a few years after Tata took over. Time will tell. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

The Jeep brand has more and more appeal. We rented a Wrangler recently in the US and it felt so much like a Defender I kept reaching for things in the wrong place. My mind was in ‘Defender mode’. Steering was vague, suspension a bit bouncy (really made me feel at home, that , but it was also reasonably comfortable, utilitarian and, above all, fun. You get that same feel of adventure, romance and of being unstoppable that you would get with a traditional Defender. Based on the views in California they seem to be pretty successful too.
Land Rover seriously missed an opportunity. |
