From your picture it looks like the switch is located towards the right hand side You can see the two other green and black wires.
The difflock switch is vertical when looking down onto the top of the box, located to the rear of the diff lock activation linkage. Very easy to remove, it is a 19mm head which can be done with a spanner or a crows foot wrench. Disconnect the wiring plug first so as not to twist the wires as you unscrew it from the housing. Test by closing the switch and check continuity using a multimeter. I, now in the process of changing mine as I have just had the switch fail on mine. |

Matt, how did you get to the switch?

The difflock switch is in the extreme top right corner of the workshop manual picture, it is not the highlighted switch.

You can do it from the centre panel is your fairly dexterous with your hands. If yours is a tdci then it is helpful to pop the high low linkage off too to get more access. If you can’t disconnect the two sections of the cable connector, you can pull the pair off the mount and deal with it in the cab. If you don’t have a crows foot wrench the spanner may be a bit of a wonky angle but you only need to crack the seal. Doing mine on Wednesday so will take some pics of it helps Hope that helps Matt |

Hello TPM - So I found the switch by feel and the connector is on and going to the loom. I still have to jack it up and check that diff lock is engaging but I can get it to wheel slip driving in circles on gravel so I guess it is. So yeah probably the switch will need to come out.
I have ordered the wrenches from Amazon - Goose Foot Wrench or 'cles pattes d'oie' - in French. Tomorrow I will take the rubber glove off the gear levers and the foam pad out to see if I can get to it but it looks as if the tin wear that makes the gearbox tunnel is going to have to come out. Then the cubby box. I asked in another post about the Cubby Box. The bolts came half out and now are just turning. 'Go Beyond' said that they go into 'Rivnuts' underneath and its these that are turning. So we gotta get mole grips on them below and undo from above. I am going around my mate Damien house Thursday after work. We will get the Cubby box out. He is quite a good mechanic so he might be able to get the switch out with a normal spanner. He likes working on the Land Rover - keeps muttering ' English' which makes me giggle. As I understand it. Disconnect the connector. Take the switch out. Reconnect the connector. Turn on the ignition. Press the the button on the switch and if the lamp on the dash does not light the switch is duff. Its my daily driver. I don't have a garage. My parking is the public parking. They have cameras and guards 24/7 which I like. Fixing stuff mostly happens either around Damiens or by the local fishing pond in the summer or it goes to Francois the Land Rover mechanic who is about 45 minutes away. Honestly you guys and this forum just about make it possible for me to have a Land Rover |

With regard to checking the switch yes you are right how to check it. Or use a multimeter.
If you clamp the bottom of the rivnut from underneath with molegrips to get them out then you don’t need to take the transmission tunnel out. Once you take the cover plate out of the middle seat box you can actually crimp up the rivnuts in a vice so they work next time. All easy to do from the top rather than taking out the transmission tunnel, to do that you need to remove the front seats in you have the sound deadening still. Hold my beer and watch this! |

Done this afternoon. Total of 20 mins start to finish maximum.

Hi Topless Mat
So last night We jacked up the front wheel, it spun freely, we engaged the diff lock and the wheel was blocked, we repeated three of four times, it seems to me that the diff lock is engaging as it should - just that the dashboard lamp is out. We got the cubby box out. Removed the inspection plate. We can see the switch. I have ordered an new one from the UK. In the meantime I will have a look at the linkage to see how you got that apart ! With the linkage. There is a small round button that you push in. Then pull or pry the whole plastic connector towards the drivers seat.
