Puma 2.2 engine failure - reconditioned or used engine
Hi,

I bought a Defender 110 Puma 2.2 with 100K kms on clock with a broken engine. It was a civil defense vehicle in France. I am now restoring the vehicle.

We took apart the engine to find out the cause of engine failure. One of the piston is melted and there are aluminum pieces everywhere. Also the turbo is completely seized. This was probably caused by faulty injectors.

I'm seeking advice on what steps to take next. Would you recommend sourcing a used engine, attempting to recondition this one, or purchasing a reconditioned engine?

Also, I'm considering what components should be replaced alongside the new engine. Obviously, the turbo and injectors need replacing, but I'm also thinking about new turbo pipes, an oil cooler, and an intercooler. Is there anything else I should be mindful of to prevent aluminum particles from damaging the new engine?

there were a couple of new engines at Duckworth Parts site sponsor, also there are a lot of engines now available from engine swappers such as TWISTED , MAHKER, JE, MW etc etc. or try for a Transit 2.2 engine DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

I bought my two replacement engines from Twisted. Complete takeout engines with turbos.

Looking at the pictures my inclination would be a take-out engine complete, that engine needs a lot of time and money spent on it.

Some of the reconditioned ones aren’t worth fitting, they use cheap aftermarket parts. I would try and find a good complete used low mileage unit. Flush out the intercooler and pipe work.
