Have you got a towing socket? If so have a good look at that (including the connections on the back), or easier unplug it and see if it solves the issue.

pretty sure someone else mentioned a problem where the loom went onto the back door for the 3rd b/light......

Was there something with the 3rd brake light surround chaffing the heating element and causing probs - or was that it just stopped the HRW?

The chafing just affects the third brake light. Fix is to run a power lead directly from loom behind the door card.
Doesn't fix OPs problem. |
