United States 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
Random Starting Issue
I have been having a very random starting issue with my 2.4 TDCI. At various times when I turn the key nothing happens at all. The starter does not come on, the engine does not turn over, etc. - every other electrical component works perfectly fine. The gauge cluster resets, the warning lights and glow plug lamp comes on/off, headlights, radio all work. I have had the under seat lid off and can hear the relays click on and off also.

My ECU was remapped by Pete Bell to have the immobilizer / alarm removed. I had originally thought this was the issue but the problem still happens. Sometimes it has happened every few days, other times weeks between. The last time I had this issue was over 1 month ago and yesterday it happened again. The problem sorts itself out magically. I let the car sit for 15 - 30 minutes and the next time I turn the key it starts up like nothing ever happened.

Has anyone experienced this issue - love the lists of quirks my Defender is amassing.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds similar to this: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69729.html?highlight=duff

That thread has gone quiet but might give you some pointers.

Happy to help with more pointers if you try some things and they work/don't work Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Be sure that your battery clamps and ground feeds are secure. It sounds simple but can be a cause of a lot of issues.
They can look it, feel it possible but they need to be tight and clean.

Only takes a minute to check, and worth doing just in case before further investigation. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I had the same problem and it was the main relais having poor contact. Take it out, clean the pins and put it in again. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR
