Insurance term. What does this mean?
Looking at a Defender for my daughter. Saw one at a good price but it comes with this clause.
"This Land Rover is offered for sale at a fraction of the usual price, simply due to being the subject of an insurance claim (Cat C – Not Stolen) in 2014"
What does this mean? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali

Cat C actually stands for Category C.

It is used to denote a specific case of car insurance write-off after a vehicle has been damaged

Vehicles written off after an accident, a flood, or fire damage are often classified as Cat C.

In its simplest form, it means that although the car is repairable, the cost of the parts, labour and potentially an expensive hire car would significantly exceed the value of the vehicle.

From a business point of view, if your car insurance company deems the damage to be beyond economic repair, it may be classified as a Cat C write-off.

What happens to Cat C insurance write-offs?

As a result, these Cat C car write-offs are often sold at special auctions to motor traders and repair garages that can fix the vehicles at trade prices – usually much less than an insurance company would be charged.

Because there is a margin for these traders and repair businesses within the car, insurance companies can sell Cat C cars through these channels and recoup some money from the sale. 2015 HT XS 90

As above; short version is it had significant damage in relation to the car value.

Not to say it may have been repaired correctly to manufacturer tolerances and with new parts, but of course not all are.

I would steer away..as would many others.
These vehicles are more difficult to sell hence sometimes cheaper.
They are also more difficult to insure..as you would need to declare it

There are plenty of others out there.. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Basically it need more money spent on it than half it’s worth from my understanding. So it’s had lots of work, but not necessarily serious work. From what I’ve read a brand new Defender gets the same Cat C if it has all its doors, bonnet , and wheels stolen, due to the cost of original LR parts and the labour.

But I would avoid it personally, unless you know Defs exceptionally well, or it silly cheap.

Looks nice to be honest and good price, apart from the Cat C

The basic problem is you need to have a deep inspection of a thing like this by someone who really knows their stuff.

As mentioned, a Defender could be Cat C due to bandits spending 10 mins unbolting a few parts, as their replacement cost at RRP and official bodyshop fitment is mega say £15k. Otherwise the car is untouched and an easy fix that could be done at a fraction of the price by a decent bodyshop.

Alternatively it could've been used in a ram raid, set fire to and rolled down a ravine into a river... and given a couple used panels, ton of filler and a respray. This obviously you'd want to avoid.

Nothing wrong with the right Cat C, but identifying them is very hard.
