Evening Ian,
The TD5 has a viscous fan (unless it's been changed to an electric one) so it will be running all the time.  |

Spot the new Td5 owners (or new to Land Rover Defenders on the whole in my case)... I wondered the same thing, every squeak, rattle, grind, crunch, whir, buzz, rattle... that my new Landy makes I'm wondering, is that normal"... and off to Google we go... So far: - constant fan on - check, that's okay... - something spinning down in the engine bay when I turn the engine off - I thought it could be a knackered turbo, but it's actually the centrifugal filter, that's okay... - glow plugs don't light up/engine doesn't start - turn the immobilizer key you idot!  |

I had a disco2 td5 and I think it will be the same with the defender if it has air conditioning fitted it will also have two electric fans on the air con radiator. These two turn on then the engine is reaching high temperatures to help it cool down it also switches fan setting to constant in ECU if overheating is logged. You'll have to connect to ECU to turn this setting off.

I have been looking into this issue as well, as my 2000 Td5 is doing the same. Electric condenser fan is on, constantly. From what research I have found so far, the fan is supposed to come on when the outdoor ambient temperature is above a certain temp, (25 celsius or so) supposedly this works separately from the actual AC system. Mine runs constantly, even in freezing temps, when starting the engine cold. AC on , or off.
No codes, after checking several times. Getting close to just replacing the whole condenser/fan unit, as the fan sounds like it's on it's last legs (I think the bearing is getting tired). It is interesting. When I bought my 2000MY last year I could not see that my fan ever came on at all. Checked it with direct cureent and it did indeed work. Checked relay and fuses all good. I now know that it comes on as required when using AC and under higher temps. I am convinced just unplugging it, the realy and removing fuses did something??? Hi. I had the same problem some time ago. If an over temperature is logged, the air con fans are triggered to run and assist in cooling then, as far as I am aware, they will remain on unless reset via the ECU. I had no codes logged at all in mine and couldn't detect a problem. Finally had the system re-gassed and all good . Didn't think it would have been this (last thing I tried) as the air con blew really cold anyway.
