They should be replaced in pairs. Typically it’s only LED that’s polarity sensitive KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

The bayonet fittings for the brake/side light are offset, one is higher than the other. They can be forced in the wrong way, but it takes a bit of effort.
The tail light is typically 5w and the brake light 21w. 80" 1948 Lightweight V8 Bowler Tomcat 130 Station wagon 90 300tdi (Santana PS10 pick up) Range Rover L322 (Ful fat) |

Doubt you have damaged anything in any meaningful way, change fuses and pop bulbs back in right way round! 80" 1948

Could be an excuse to upgrade to the sealed LED variety? I was fed up of the others as the bulbs didn't last.
New ones (lots of makes) seem to have lasted and the install is a 20 minute job. |

Put side lights on then install bulb, you'll know when they're wrong way in by the way they light up.

looks like I have a brake issue, the side light system works no bother, but for some reason the brake lights keep blowing a fuse, and the rear door light doesn't work Any ideas what could be wrong? Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Check the wire that goes into the rear door through the corrugated rubber gland that might be snapped and shorting to something.

Had an annoying few days troubleshooting wiring loom only to discover the stop lamp contact was shorting on bulb body.
