Hi Tolley,
It was a Merc OE one which we got from a main dealer. If I recall correctly (it was 1985!!) it was as cheap to buy an OE one as an aftermarket equivalent. Even though we weighed everything that we put on it, didn't exceed the recommended max weight and distributed the load evenly, it couldn't cope with the washboard surfaces on the main dirt tracks. A couple of the threaded roof gutter struts sheared completely. Fortunately we were close to a friendly garage owner who welded them us for us and wouldn't accept a penny for his efforts. Other than the roof rack problem and a door check strap which snapped when a strong gust of wind blew the door through 180 deg, we suffered no other failures. The door/hinge design was such that the door just swung through 180 deg and did no panel damage at all. We only got stuck once, due to driver error, when the vehicle slid sideways down a steep embankment after pulling up too close to the edge of the road to let another vehicle pass. A scary moment as the G wagon was at an alarming tilt angle and top heavy with the roof rack load. The passing vehicle stopped to help but couldn't get enough traction to tow us out safely. We got help from a local farmer and his tractor, shared some of our beer stocks with him and had a good chat. I'm glad it was my mate that was driving and not me!! |

I think I may have found something to trump it, although only in the digital world at present Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge https://www.autoevolution.com/news/mercede...42939.html Looks more Mini Moke than G Wagon to me. |

A G is the one car I would chop the 110 in for, without any hesitation.
