I’m warming more and more to a g wagon, especially as the new defender is so Censored . Hopefully i’ll keep the landy until I have the money for one.

Found this gem the other day.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ad...rchad=Used

Looks a bit more comfy for crossing continents in yet still rugged enough to drive anywhere when you get to your destination. Seems like a good replacement as I only use my defender as a toy anyway. Also I keep seeing standard g wagons on my insta going off road and they look epic.

That does look very nice. For that money you could get 2 Range Rovers of the same age and keep one for spare 😂

I remember the first time I realised how good a G Wagon was compared to the various Land Rovers and RRCs I'd been used to off road.

I was out beating on a pheasant shoot and watching a convoy of two RRCs, a Ninety and at the back a SWB G Wagon making their way along a track on the opposite side of the valley that had been used by forestry machinery to clear out trees blown over in the storms back in the late 80s.

The lead RRC got 'beached' on an exposed tree root and everyone behind ground to a halt, after much Censored around to no avail the guy with the G Wagon backed up to a point where he could get off the track and simply drove around the convoy until he was in the front, hooked up a tow rope and dragged the stuck RRC off the root. Tow rope was then used by that RRC to assist the next one before the Ninety cleared the obstacle under its own steam.

Funniest thing was the next weekend we were all watching in eager anticipation for a Subaru L series turbo estate to get stuck at the same place and were very disappointed when it didn't Bow down

I get the impression that the g would break down half as much as each of the range rovers though.

Also i think i remember reading somewhere that theyre fully galvanised before painting. I may stand corrected but tht would mean it would last twice as long too.

If I hadn't bought my Wrangler last year, I think I would be taking a run out to Doncaster for a viewing.

My mate had a three door 300GD in the mid 1980's which we took to Iceland and spent three weeks touring the interior dirt track roads. Holiday of a lifetime and the G Wagon never put a foot wrong. We were retracing the route taken by Alan Stewart in the Desmond Bagley novel Running Blind.

Stick in an OM606 or OM605 and you'd have a great truck!

Check though, a lot of those wolf military ones don't have a front difflock. Some have the gubbins inside the axle so you can just bolt on the actuator (and all the pipework and pull lever in the cab), but most need a complete "difflock" axle.

@ LandymanStefan.... no they're not galv'd, but have a decent paint job, and the chassis are waxoil'd from new.

That book/film was one of my inspirations for touring Iceland in my Discovery Thumbs Up

Did you go over the transporter bridge crossing the tungnaa river Supercat?
When we arrived the platform was at the other side so muggins was elected to cross the walkway to release it,so it could be winched back to load the vehicle onboard.

Found some old photos of the bridge with us crossing it. And one going through a fairly shallow river.

Once across the bridge was enough for us. We didn't fancy pushing our luck any further!

That reads like an advert for the wheels and the vehicle just happens to come along with it!

I cant be leave how good the chassis is for a 1990 , my 97 300 is a lot worse than it ,with the back already renewed .
body and floor just as good .
my plan is to fit a 606 engine in soon .

And after 25 years or so of landrover ownership I am moving on and my much loved and looked after 300tdi will be sold soon Big Cry
