Afaik, there will be 12v on the lamps, it is the earth that is switched. When I had a similar problem it turned out to be a spider had made its home in the front interior light!

Ok.... I’m a bit of a novice with wiring but I’m willing to try!
So would a switched earth lead back to the likelihood that it’s the wiring to one of the door switches that’s broken somewhere? Broken wire=open circuit= impossible to earth? Thanks for the help so far 🙂 |

The Defender door switches have a single where to them and the switch provides an earth with the door open. It is possible that the wire to one of the switches has broken and is earthing to the bodywork. To check this remove the switching check the condition of the wire connected to it. No trim removal should be required, the switch is held in place by a single screw.
It may still be a fault with the 10AS unit but worth checking the cheap things first. |

I changed all of the door switches and had a look at as much wire as I could see when I had them out.
If that’s a negative (pardon the pun) I guess I’m removing the 10as for further investigation 😤 |

If the interior lights never come on, then it seems likely that the 10AS unit is at fault, otherwise it may just be that the "lamp on" function is timing-out due to the alarm unit thinking a door has been open too long. There may be a chafed wire in the wire to either of the two side doors or the front passenger door. I'm unsure of the exact routing of the cables to the switches (and am unable to check as I no longer have a Defender), I think the rear side door switch cables go down the 'B' pillars into the seat box and the rear door switch cable is in the main loom to the rear.
Although the alarm unit seems dry, it may have suffered damp in its past. Unplug the connectors to see if any of the pins are corroded. |

Check the A pillar trim screws haven’t penetrated any wiring while you are at it. It’s easily done, or if not the screw crushed as there is little room.
Mine are playing up too, but it’s door switches on mine. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

That’s brilliant advice folks, thank you.
I think there’s nothing else for it but to start tracing wires and looking for breaks or chafing. This car is trying my patience but I shudder to think how many hours labour I might need to pay someone to find the fault! |
