Churchy, if your plan was to put it into storage soon anyway, why not bring that forward and do it now? Gives you time to decide which way to proceed and gather quotes/build up funds to make the necessary repairs. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

If you really want to keep it and your plan was to put it into storage anyway, why not do that with the poorly engine.
And then search for a replacement engine at the right price in your own time. Then pick up a cheap set of wheels to transport your tools etc. |

Wasn't there some engines for sale around £2500?
Seems to make more sense if the rest of the truck is ok to fit a new engine? otherwise your chasing problems? You say you were going to store it away so guess you don't require the cash out of it for now? Could you cope with a Transit type van or large cheap estate for now for now until its sorted. |

Speak to these guys who specialise in the transit engines: C&F engineering 01462 851100.
They are the most knowledgeable guys I know and do reconditioned ones. |

Seems to me like they need to tell you whats causing the low compression.
Several things bent or stuck valve leaking pistons worn out valve train ( this would give low compression across all cylinders) so that give you a clue. How low is the compression in each cylinder? They can check all of the above with a pressure test ( which i assume they have already done) and a leakage test with compressed air all without having to strip the engine down. It will tell you if its head related or something deeper in the block. Never had to do it with the defender, but i always , use engine machine shops tucked away on the industrial estate, find one of those and go and have a chat. Pop it in your garage and work out a strategy in your own time. There are loads of transits around that dont meet the euro 6 legislation so cheap assuming you dont need euro 6! Sounds like you have a good gearbox and defender, so its a shame to let a leaky engine ruin your plans. |

Now this might sound stupid but if it's going to go into storage why don't you ask a collage or university if they want to do a engine rebuild protect
You obviously pay for any materials but insist on the tutor being there for the work being done We have to keep students busy learning about this stuff and may get some young landrover defender enthusiasm coming through |

I would whip the head off to establish the reason for the low compression. Removing the cylinder head should not take long nor be expensive, and will almost certainly reveal the problem. You will then know whether that engine is salvageable or is scrap.
If you were planning to store the vehicle for a while then do that, but at least you'd know whether you need to find a new or reconditioned engine or whether it is more sensible to rebuild the original. You can plan this and/or do this whilst the vehicle is stored. Your options, I suggest, are either to recondition your current engine, buy a brand new engine, or buy a salvaged engine from a scrapped vehicle which you could use as is or rebuild. You really can't decide on the most sensible option though unless you know what is wrong with the old one and whether or not it is rebuildable or exchangeable. If you want a Defender long term, and are happy with the one you have (apart from the engine), then if I were you I would stick with the vehicle I know rather than sell it and buy another. |

I have rebuild my transit engine once, so i do not want to do this again. Here is an interesting writeup if you want to swap the bullet proof 4.0 AMC inline 6. Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

If you can afford too, store it, and look into fitting a different type of engine. If not get rid now and buy the vehicle your business needs.

Thanks all for the sound advice - I knew I could rely on you!
Having slept on it - I am going with what was in my mind I think which is to keep it and store it (I need to find storage which is the next task - not quite enough room at home to keep it there) and bring forward my purchase of hopefully a T5 4motion. I am too attached to the wagon and it was always bought with a mind to keeping whatever it threw at me. I will however bear you mind Martin! However not quite sure how I would put a figure one what it may be worth in current condition?! I have this morning instructed some further investigation to hopefully give me a more definitive diagnosis which as you guys have said will make the plan of attack more strategic. Once I know more I will update if you guys don’t mind and probably also ask for a check list of things to do before tucking it away. Thanks again for your advice - I know there are more important things going on in the world and at the end of the day its just a lump of metal - but as you all know they get under your skin and become much more than that! |

Maybe it isn't just a lump of metal.
Once you have owned it long enough and once it has shared enough of life's experience with you, it becomes a friend. And friends are not always perfect. |
