2000 Defender 110 Td5 CSW Coniston Green

Bleeding those Bleeding Brakes

Due to last year's MOT noting the imbalance of the brakes I decided to make use of the long weekend to do the callipers. So both front callipers[1] and flexy hoses changed. Used Nanocom to bleed afterwards. The fluid had been allowed to drip out, wasn't too worried as I wanted to put some fresh in.

Now the annoying part.
'00 Defender Td5 110 with ABS

The brakes will pump and stop but give them 5-10 seconds and I can press peddle to the floor.

I have used a Nanocom to bleed the modulator (pump brake then operate command), used the individual brake tests to bleed them. Also used old skool pump peddle and then open nipple etc.

Not 100% on the order it should be done in but we have tried closest to furthest from master and vice-versa. Tried Front Right, Rear Left, Front Left, Rear Right and vice-versa.

Tonight it has an mk1 block of wood wedging it down after pumping up to see if moves some air about.

Worried the Modulator has issues but it fires up, and when I took it on a "rather interesting drive"[2] I did get enough speed and pump to get it to skid a wheel on gravel and the ABS worked fine.

[1] Got to love Paddocks, OEM means one Br*tp*rt bright zinc (silver) calliper and one AllM*kes yellow zinc (gold) caliper
[2] Just a very short around the block via the lanes but as I needed to pump brakes before it would stop it was slow and needed lots of pumping. I thought it might improve if I had the engine running and I was able to give it a run.

The callipers have the bleed nipple on the top when fitted?

That would be the expected location to find the bleed nipples on brakes. I guess it is my fault that I didn't point out that when following the front right, rear left bits that I was actually bleeding the fluid from the calliper.

The modulator doesn't have a bleed valve, it is just a button you can press in the Nanocom it does a burr noise etc.

I was just checking that the correct caliper had been fitted on the correct side. If fitted on the wrong side it makes the bleed nipple on the caliper at the bottom, not the top, so air can get trapped inside, and not be bled out.

I can’t believe abs unit would be the problem. I’m sure you’ve checked for leaks around the new parts, and all is ok. I would be tempted to clamp flex pipe to right caliper and try pedal, then try the same with left, to see if any difference is felt.

Well, we pumped and pushed the piston back and forth a few times today but still no improvement. I have resorted to asking a local mechanic to fix it as they have the ramp and space to do the vac bleed plus it needs an MOT so they can do that at the same time.

This afternoon I took the time to give it a wash.
