Dash illumination problems
Firstly I have some uneven illumination on the heater controls, I assume there is a bulb back there I can dive in and change? I’ve lost the fan speed illumination.

Secondly, the green colour of the lettering and on the clock seems to be fading in places to a more yellow colour. Not sure if it’s 5yrs exposure to the sun or something else. You can see it faintly in the pics. Any way to sort this? I see you can buy a new clock for £100 from LR, but I don’t fancy that every few years.

What about the dash panel inserts? Are there alternatives available? As you can see mine have some other marks around the blower control that have always been there which would be good to sort.

Any products out there to give it a fresh look?

Does LED work in the Puma though?
If so, what sucesss did you have and what type?

The clock I have issues with too, my bulb has gone in it. You can get them on eBay, I have one but have not fitted it yet.
I’m presuming it isn’t difficult seeing as it’s a little bayonet thing No Guts, No Glory.

LED bulbs with correct fitting will work. But not necessarily good result as their light output is very directional. Years ago there was a big discussion and interest here on the forum to replace dash incandescent bulbs by leds, but results were not very good.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I briefly tried LEDs in the Puma heater controls - it was hopeless, they were far too directional! So it was back to "heritage" bulbs.

Yes, I can imagine hence mentioning probably giving a patchy light and dark spots appearance.

These ‘hertitage’ incandescent bulbs are about the only filament incandescent bulbs in mine at all left. They do seem to be rather keen to die off after not too long as well! No Guts, No Glory.

I know what you mean but I had good results with these on my TDCi. They have a number of LED’s so emit light in all directions Thumbs Up

Thanks for the replies so far. Does the clock have more than one bulb? I guess that would explain the uneven colour if it has two or more bulbs.

What about the bit the light actually shines through? I suppose the only fix is a new one, or are there aftermarket parts people have fitted?

P.s. love the ‘heritage’ bulbs! 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Do you have any photos of your LEDs in action?

I noticed that these are white, shouldn't they be green?

Does anyone have a full list of all the bulbs to complete the illumination of the dash/interior ie type/figment and quantity?

I seem to remember a forum member from many years ago not only replaced all the bulbs, but also added ones into door handles, foot wells,etc.... could have been k9f, but unsure

I don’t have photos in afraid. I am away from home at the moment, I will try to get some when I’m home in a few weeks.

They are white but there are green filters on the dash parts that are lit so the light comes through green

I would describe them as factory appearance, slightly brighter but maintenance free > 110 XS Double Cab

Hank - Interesting - Those are SMD chip type which are pretty good. I presume their draw is less than 1.2w each a single type standard 'heritage' filament incandescent bulbs.

IIRC the IPAC. (Instrument cluster) has LED SMD chips as standard.

The number of how many bulb holders there is I don't know, I know there is quite a few there.
I'd say at least 6x minimum.

The clock I can't see what can be done as this is a bulb with a green sleeve cover on, it has the green dial face screen too but I haven't tried to swap it at all yet to see what I'm dealing with.

SMB - That may well have been me as I have all of that and still do, although other members have had similar before too.
(Cannot remember who.)
My system in that respect mimics factory fit lighting control and it's been 100% reliable from the day I fitted it.
It is however critically important you don't exceed the standard fit current draw but with LED's you'd really need to go something to even get near anyway. Laughing

This is of course OT from the OP's thread. No Guts, No Glory.

Not OT at all, I’m trying to tart up the look of the factory dash a bit. Might look to replace the bulbs with LEDs at the same time 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Sorry UtilityTruck for highjacking your thread, but Steve(customsteve), do you have a link to your build thread as I remember it being very impressive and was always threatening to have a go myself based around your work.

Many thanks

Steve

509Ts for speedo - go for a three or more chip bulb, single chip has too much light loss
T5s for fuel, clock, temp and rev gauges, also temp controls but the light is too thin for such a broad light

The 509Ts are a bitch to get in, thin but flat (unangled) tweezers, plenty of pressure & twist - it took me three hours to do two bulbs
