Hello Yannis
This was mine at 30K...'clean' (first change). I wouldn't be worried at yours, it's done it's job, there will probably be very little build up from now on. How many miles... Was there the correct amount of oil in there... Click image to enlarge Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html Last edited by X4SKP on 12th Dec 2017 5:41pm. This was first change at 18,000 miles and there was about 200ml less oil than there should have been, but I have heard this is common.

I have changed the oil on the transfer box many times on various Defenders and I have never had more than a few tiny fragments of metal on the magnetic plug, nothing like your photo. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Along with the fragments in the photo was a sort of metallic sludge all around the bottom of the magnet. . I'm not sure what it could be from or if I should be worried, but as X4SKP said, the plug has done its job, I just wonder what all the fragments are from.

From the contents of the transfer box bedding in to one and other I'd imagine. I wouldn't be in the least bit concerned by that on the first change but I would be by the fifth change.

I don't know specifically about transfer boxes, but I'd be inclined to agree about things bedding in etc on the first oil change.

I changed all my oils and filters over the past couple I weekends.
On my 1yr old 110 Heritage (21,000km) the transfer case drain plug was exactly the same. Transfer case was 600ml short on oil from the factory. The front diff is definitely harder on the oil than the rear diff, quite a difference in colour. I used.... Castrol EPX 80-90 for the diffs. Motul 8100 for the engine oil. Motul Gear 300 for the gearbox and transfer case. All genuine oil, fuel and air filters. 2015 110 Defender Heritage Utility Station Wagon 2014 B8 Audi RS4 2003 Audi A2 1.4 Tdi |

Front diff oil will always be a darker colour than the rear diff oil as some swivel/CV grease will leak past the swivel seal into the axle case during normal use.

This was mine at about 86k, shortly after acquiring the truck a couple of years ago. No idea how long since the last change. Look closely you can see what looks like the small bits of copper. Guessing maybe previously someone has mistakenly stuck a copper washer on the end of the plug, having nowhere to go it had been rattling around inside the box and been chewed up!
Click image to enlarge Recently changed again at 108K and there was maybe less than half what's in that picture, wish I'd taken a taken a photo. For comparison here's my gearbox plug at 86k: Click image to enlarge and again at 108k: Click image to enlarge Wearing away nicely I guess! |

Change number two at 32,000 miles
Click image to enlarge Compared to change number one at around 20,000 miles Click image to enlarge Seems to have improved, but there is still something going on in there... |
