Morning all,
Noticed a lot more drive train slack when pulling away in 1st or in reverse. Requires a lot of feathering of the clutch to avoid a huge clunk, audible middle to rear of the vehicle. I had the clutch replaced six months ago, although I've never been happy with it as it is noisier, more rattly, the gear selection clunkier and more difficult, and there has always been a little slack from the get go. Originally the gearbox and clutch were perfect. Very smooth, very quiet. The clutch was fitted whilst the vehicle was broken down abroad, OE fitting, by a LR dealer in Spain. So as I wasn't there I can only presume it was done properly and with an OE part as stated. So I can I check what the clunk is and where the slack is located. Clearly I'm thinking half shafts, but should I be checking for anything else? Check the easiest cheapest things first is what I'd recommend. Then go upwards in value abd work from there so to speak. No Guts, No Glory.

When I read this my first thought output shaft. I was surprised how much slack disappeared when I had mine replaced. James

Had this with mine and changed the A frame , Turned out to be the rear prop UJ was as stiff as ducks @@@@ , once it was off . Looked and felt fine .

If the symptoms have come on fairly rapidly then I would take a long look at your diffs as well as half shafts , flanges etc
It was the huge slack in my drivetrain that was the precursor to diff failure . Once it was replaced nearly all play has gone and no more riding the clutch !!! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |

Quick one, how do I test diff slack/wear? Twist the prop and see how much play there is before biting? If so, how much play should there be, by degrees or mm? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Will do that as well Caterham. I drive daily and negotiate a huge number of bends/hairpins, which on reading up seems to stress flanges/half shafts. Easy fix, so hoping its the cause. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Bongo1 - Yes, same here but prop in situ all UJ's seemed fine when checked. It was only once off I could tell a single UJ had completely failed and the UJ spider arm was loos in the bearing cup and the roller bearings were mashed to dust non existent.
The rest were fine. All seemed okay in situ but once the prop was removed it was evidently clear. It seems to the the UJ's to the rear diff that are often the culprits and often on an 90. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Noise is getting worse, so I took a video of the slack/play I have between T-box and Diff. There is little or no sound when slack has been picked up, gear engaged and in drive, but there is a distinct rattle the moment I clutch or disengage drive but the shaft is still turning. T-box, Diff, UJ?

Actuaĺly you would need to remove the propshaft to asses the cause of the slack. Puma 110" SW
