Well today I decided to do my bit to atone for mankinds misgivings (well some of them anyway) so I went for a drive in the 2.25 n/a LR88....in the wind and rain. Oh, there was a hail stone shower as well.

I remember when I 1st bought mine, Ya geezer it was cold, when we had the snow etc, my hands were like ICE by the time I hit work, That was even with the heater going full belt! One day my mum happened to spot the flaps at the front were about 2CM open!! Sharp sorted that! Just think poor procta doing 70mph up the A19, with the cold wind blowing through. When I bought my first LR, a ragtop 80", I ended up driving back from South Wales to Buckinghamshire starting late afternoon, and it was around 1979 when we were in the middle of a very cold and snowy winter (we had them in the good old days!). The A40 west of Abergavenny was only ploughed to a single lane, with drifts higher than the Land-Rover, and the whole journey back was on roads with 6" or more of snow. I remember Birdlip Hill as being particularly interesting, and just West of Burford I was asked by the Police to pull someone out of the ditch. It really was a Land-Rover driver's paradise, and most of the time I was the only vehicle out on the road (things were very different then).
The downside was that the vehicle had no heater at all (it was an option back then), also all the canvas draught strips and flaps were missing from the doors, and the ragtop itself was a bit ropey (the rear window plastic was missing). Although I did have decent winter clothing and good gloves, my hands became so cold that I ended up stopping at just about every pub along the route, rushing in to the toilet to use the hot air hand dryer to get some circulation back, and rushing out again to carry on. I got some very strange looks! I was also stopping regularly to get the snow and ice off the screen (the only demister I had was my hands - remove glove, place hand flat on screen until either the ice melts or the hand sticks to the glass, repeat with other hand, etc). It was a memorable journey and I loved every minute of it! |

Aimed the car down a hill, and put the hammer down through the gears, share will power and getting a tow off lorries, we were rocking! Stopping was a challange due to the brakes at the time, used to be a pain in the arse though when people pulled out on me, After doing all that work to get the motor to 70 mph! One thing though i will always remember, and i still laugh at it now. Which i really will miss. Is the smokey start ups. We had finished work, and getting in our cars, One of the lads who was parked next me, decided to change his footware. I slung the defender over into life and a massive OIly Diesely cloud smothered him, He looked at me with a and i couldnt help but laugh. his reaction had me in stitches all the way home, and most of the night too.
