A lot of sense here.

Greenlaning is not offroading.

They are public spaces, used by other people for recreation too.

I have used this lane many times with friends, usually in Series vehicles.

A certain type think this is a free offroad site and have destroyed private property with their "challenge" trucks and old lifted Discos.

When fitting "kit" to our Defenders we should bear in mind the image we give to others when in the countryside.

Just my opinion.

I totally agree - hence my reference to driving on established tracks and not off piste. I meet quite a few groups of seriously off road prepared machinery and its not the image I want to be associated with. I also see evidence of where they have been driving and the damage they do to the landscape - not necessary. When I was younger the first thing I did to a Defender was a suspension lift, guards, snorkel etc. My approach now is to keep my vehicle as near standard looking as possible and as traditional looking as I can - hence the softtop! My aim is to get out into the countryside and drive an occasional challenging track.

Quite agree, I do cringe when green laning when you see the extreme off-roaders. They may not be doing anything wrong but I personally think they they give the wrong impression.

In answer to training, I've been lucky enough to have some half day training sessions , which were just work jollies but learnt the basics and very useful.

You only have to look at Youtube to see how things can go very wrong, very easily. Slow as possible, fast as necessary. James

I should also say I've not been out alone, All my trips have been with others. Mostly groups off this forum, which which is a great free way to learn the basics as well as routes. Info like no more than 6 vehicles in a group, when you can/can't go, when to go high/low box, when to engage diff lock etc James

A lot of common sense has been talked.

Greenlanes are just unsealed surface roads and so all relevant motoring laws apply i.e. driving licence, insurance, MOT etc

So my first modification would be a bucketful of common sense. If you are unconfident about anything please back out.

CBs I hate as too many people just prattle on the airwaves.

So decent maps/GPS so you know where you are. Check if lane is legal. Charged mobile phone

Steering guard, diff guard and Rock and Tree sliders would be first physical mods. R + T are useful in carparks

Most people would say go team up with another 4x4. That in some ways is good as long as the other driver will not push you to go further then you are happy with.

If unhappy about anything be prepared to back out. Your other driver may be able to talk you through a difficult section, however if you are unhappy with anything back out!

In standard form you can drive most of the lanes in the UK all I do now is change my wheels and tyres to Mud Terrains fold up my side steps check fuel and sort out the Ordnance Survey map of the area I'm heading for I like a paper map and to mark where I'm going the night before all part of the build up unlike leeds I like a CB a bit of banter or prattle always lightens the day up.I never been laneing on my own unless near home where I know the lane's well and not so much fun on the CB talking to thin air now that is prattle

One I was glad I did was a really heavy wax beforehand! Does a lot to prevent all the light scratches from bushes etc. Cheers, David
