Steering hardens when driving through water
On my 96 300tdi, if I drive through a bit of flooded lane or a large puddle that splashes up, the steering becomes heavy momentarily, it is as if the power steering cuts for a moment.

Any ideas?!

Many thanks,

Huttopia

It will be the belt slipping. Not sure you can adjust it out TBH. It has happened to me a few times in the past but it soon returns to normal. 2010 XS USW

Given that it is a serpentine belt, adjustment is likely to prove difficult. Replacement might help obviate the problem.

It's the belt. I would have it off, check condition and probably replace tensioner. Cheers

Do the Tdi's have the same problem as the 300 Tdi's with the serpentine belt were the tensioner was putting a load on the belt, slowing it down, as well as cutting into it. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

How much was the tensioner? if cheaper one it may have failed, check belt, change if looking suspect then consider tensioner.

How deep water are we talking about? Cheers

My power steering doesn't work for the first 10 seconds sometimes due to heavy condensation

To check your belt wear /stretch , there are 2 marks on the tensioner one the sprung load part, and one on the fixed part, when these line up, its time to renew the belt, [ 300 tdi"s]
