Dark Gearbox Oil
After around 10 months my Gearbox oil is looking rather dark compared to the original colour it went in;

Hi Yannis, is that the main gearbox, or transfer box?

If main, I am surprised it is that dark after 10 months. How many miles have you done since the change?

The 2.2 service manual only calls for main gearbox oil to be changed at 120k miles!!

See this post :

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic62565.html

I wouldn't want to leave it that long and change mine every 3 miles, or in my case 6000 miles.

This is the main gearbox oil.

The intermediate shaft went about 4 months back and its had a new ashcroft shaft.

About 8k miles I guess since the last service.

It’s going back in until the new oil arrives in about a week. I will also put in a magnetic drain plug and see what’s on it in a weeks time.

You done any long high speed runs? Mine went in fresh and looked like that after 6k of running to and from Morocco mid summer. 1951 80" S1 2.0

I used Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF

As per Martins sticky post in the TDCI section of the forum.

Normally short runs to work, but probably half the mileage is made up of long runs into the mountains.

Possibly overfilled?
That would over heat the oil and change the colour.

Mine has looked like that every time I've changed it, both main and transfer.

Mine has always darkened too, with low mileage.

It doesn't help that it's a reddish colour, or at least not as golden as the Transfer box oil. Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
Then: 2004 2.5 TD5 90 Hard Top (X-Tech Edition)
