Early 2.4 reliability upgrades
I have an early 2007 2.4tdci I have owned for a number of years and is now up to 130000 miles. Touch wood it has been fairly reliable although over the past year I have had to replace starter motor, water pump and EGR (again!)
Recently the clutch release is now leaking badly so the 90 is off the road, and I am looking at removing the engine and transmission and going through them to try and improve future reliability for overseas trips. I am looking for advice at what I should be changing and doing to the mechanicals.

The engine is it’s original which from memory developed a problem with oil relief system destroying the engine if it got stuck? Are these potentially faulty parts replaceable? The advice I had from dealer in past was if it hasn’t done it in the first few years they are not likely to fail but it has always been in the back of my mind.
I was intending to do the timing chain/ tensioner at the same time. Any reason why I shouldn’t change the head gasket as well? Anything else I should be doing to it?

Transmission - I fitted a new revised shifter housing and dowels recently after the original ones became so sloppy in use, and a replacement gearstick to prevent the rattling, and oil change.
I have a complete Ashcroft modded output shaft kit, clutchfix clutch and new release system to fit. I am tempted to get a Ashcroft sleeved casing for the transfer box as previous defenders have poured oil out through the intermediate shaft. Again anything else I should be doing? What is the life expectancy of the MT82?
Axles are fine and will be rebuilt with new seals/ bearings/cvs and drive flanges (rear has had 300tdi shafts for years)

Any advice welcomed!
