The 90 started to smoke really badly yesterday especially under light load crusing speed on the motorway, when booted hard huge cloud then cleared a bit, back to cruse and bad again almost embarrasing even down to artic speed trying to hide behind trailers. Clear in town untill booted hard, no mil light on dash and fuel consumption change, i recon my egr is jammed closed/open which ever but it still does the chuckka chukka,
What do you all think ?? Am i barking up the right tree ?? Its going into Matfords Sat morning when i get home (as long as i don't get pulled on the M5 Friday night) If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Yes had a good look over the hoses esp looking for soft spots where they poss blow up inside and seal themselves, even checked while running spaying the intercooler with fairy water for leaks If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Don't know how to check but thought i would detect a missfire and that my fuel consumption would have changed if it was wasting that much fuel. both Mondays and Tuesdays tank fulls were both 350milers If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Give me a clue i know whwere it is, rear r/h of the engine but how to disconnect i am not sure, but if it has chokked up surely i would be better blanking it as as test. I saw a LR assistance man do this once but that time the turbo had siezed up, i have popped the hose off and it spinns freely, don,t know if the adjustable vanes are working but the linkage moves ok Oh and strangely enough my mil light spends most of its life illuminated i suspect a dodgy mass air flow or fuel pressure sensor dealer does not seam bothered, the one week when its off i actually have a problem i would expect it to show up for. The same as when the turbo siezed up the 90 could barely crawl down the road and yet no light and or faults when LR assistance plugged rugged laptop to ecu. Running perfectly for a couple of weeks nice cruse at 60 ish all of a suddend light on 1 week later goes off only faults air flow range low and or fuel pessure to high, i am sure it has a mind of its own given up bothering about it If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Click image to enlarge The EGR assembly is on the nearside rear of the engine block below and in front of the red engine lift bracket. When it is removed dtc's P1402 and P1409 will be logged and the MIL will stay illuminated. If the defender enters limp mode, reset the ignition and limp mode will cancel. Black smoke does usually mean overfuelling and as it is under acceleration that gives the most smoke then it could be the MAF or MAP sensors or a turbo fault whether at the variable vanes or the hoses. also if the EGR was stuck fully open at full throttle then that would also result in black smoke. You stated as well that a high fuel pressure dtc was logged? Do you know the dtc? Depending on how high the pressure was, the Pressure limiting valve could have been operated (this is a one shot safety valve that needs replacing if used) Also it could be a faulty Rail Fuel pressure sensor giving erroneous readings to the ecu? Though these faults should throw up an out of range dtc. Click image to enlarge Also check to see if you are using oil, at the dipstick and the tailpipe. If you are...... well that's another longer story to be written once you know for sure Brian. Last edited by Lorryman100 on 5th Oct 2011 2:00am. Edited 1 time in total |

Sorry to disturb the topic... ....Can this kind of DTC and limp mode be cleared by the scanguage?

Yes.....the older scangauge could only show tested dtc's which can cause the limp mode to activate, and these dtc's can be cleared. To exit limp mode switch off and restart and as long as the fault doesn't reoccur then limp mode will be cancelled. If it doesn't cancel then there is a problem which is causing the ECU to go into limp mode again to protect the engine from damage. The newer models of scangauge can now show pending dtc's (untested) as well as tested. Brian. |

I have checked the oil level and thats fine, I tryed to disconnect the egr as per Lorrymans photo but it seams jammed or has got hot or melted together i cant un-plug it with out breaking it. Tonights journey from Bromsgrove up to Nottingham towing a generator was interesting, clear when under load but very smoking when running at a steady 56, still no mil light but it did go into limp mode 3 times once on the Motorway and twice going up the link road from the M1 past Ratcliffe power Station, turnned off 30 secs started again ok. Driving through the city clear untill crusing at a constant speed light load.
Does not compute or stack up to any faults i have encountered before. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. Every Day 16 MY Discovery 4 Commercial Workshop and Escort Vehicle Weekends 07MY L322 TDV8 Vogue SE Series 1 80" 3ltr 6cyl with overdrive No Worries 4X4 |
