My 86 bought in 1988 cost me £150, prices hadn’t moved up much in 20 years

Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it has the early forward swinging narrow front springs to me. And by 53, weren't there external door handles? |

Spot on, on both points. It has narrow front springs, no outside door handles, bulkhead sidelights, and the early rear tub support, all from an 0610 series chassis (actually an adjacent chassis number to a Rolls B40 vehicle), and of course it has the chassis itself. The rest (and reg) are '53, including the spot-welded front wings.
Something of a chimera really. Since it needs a new chassis at the moment my intention is to put a correct 3610 chassis back under it. |

As well as the door bottoms without the door handles, the door tops are early too and definitely not off a 53.
I’ll get my coat....... |

What about the axles and gearbox Blackwolf? Any chance they are from a 50? I spotted the freewheel hubs so guessed unlikely to be a freewheel gearbox with tracta joints in the front axle. Purely from a value point of view is it worth considering reregistering it as a 1950? If this is possible.

Good spot on the FWH although all 80’s had Tracta Joints

I've learned something there defender9. Thanks.
I had wrongly assumed they dropped the tracta joints when they dropped the freewheel 4x4 system on the later 80's. |

I like it and who cares if it’s built from more than one vehicle, you bought it in good faith and have obviously cherished it all those years. Many of the so called concours Series Ones have been built up using a myriad of parts which were not part of the original vehicle. |

Engine and box are '53 (siamese bore 2.0l, dog clutch transfer box, although presently it has a later spread-bore 2.0l fitted), front axle is '50, rear '53. When it finally goes through the workshop it will emerge as a '53 with the correct chassis number for the V5 and registration number. The existing 1950 chassis has rotted severely over the rear half, and it makes more sense for me to put a new chassis and sell the '50 chassis to someone who needs one and has better welding skills than I do.
I do have a spare 1950 1600cc engine and freewheel gearbox, though, so perhaps I could legitimately rebuild the one into two. |

Thank you! It was my first LR and over the years I have had a huge amount of fun with it, and learned a lot about driving and mechanicing too. Of all the LRs I've owned it is probably the one I am most attached to. |
