There was a feature in last months' Land Rover Owner I think with a step by step. My old Td5 had ATF in, no problems in around 80K miles.

Thing is I have about 7 litres of ATF left (used it for tractor hydraulic fluid) so will use this to keep costs down.
Haynes manual advises putting axle stands on front but speaking to independent he said no need!! Any way have ordered steering pump from ACS who recondition old pumps and sell them for £89 with proviso you give them your old pump. Has 18 month unlimited mileage warranty with it Looking forward to doing it. [/list] |

It's got to be 18 months since I did mine, no major drama apart from make a note on how the belt runs, which side of the pulleys etc. It gets a little embarrasing to be struggling to put the belt back on and it won't quite fit even prompting you to change the pulley on the pump just in case the second hand one was a different size. Quick check of the Haynes book of Lies and all just fell into place

Tommo, do you have any details for ACS ?
My steering pump is leaking, don't know if it's just a replaceable seal or not. |

Hi Martin
phone them on 01827 259699. They operate an exchange system which is why they are cheap, you have to send them your old pump and this then activates the 18 month warranty. cheers Tommo |

When I changed the steering box on my D2 I siphoned as much as I could out of the reservoir then attached a brake bleed hose to the bleed nipple and left it to drain until it stopped. It's nigh on impossible to get it all out in one go so refilled and repeated, should have got the majority of the old out.

A cautionary tale
Although I successfully fitted the pump I could not get it to pressure up Took all day Saturday and Sunday and took a day off on Monday to try to sort...turned out I had not put on the rubber o ring on the connection to the pump. Once this was done it was fine. Checked the Haynes manual and also the LR mag that featured changing pump and there was no mention in them about this tiny little rubber ring that caused all the problems. anyway now all good. |

Hi Boyd
from memory there are 3 bolts to remove once the pulley is removed. Have a look at the landrover defender workshop manual on line if stuck. good luck Tommo |

All done thanks, saw it on the workshop manual blown up image.... hadn’t realised the lower two bolts both went through the front bracket and into the main casting. 2003 Zambezi Silver TD5 110 XS SW overland prepped....
