I write from the comfort of my hospital bed.
It’s well known, certainly for me anyways , that nearly every Maintanance job on your LR ends up with some kind of injury. Skint knuckles, bleeding fingers, bashed head on the chassis the list is endless. I’ve always said that the job isn’t done right unless your bleeding and I’m always bleeding fingers during routine maintenance. I can’t be alone, every one of you must have had the slipped spanner skint knuckle and loud swearing episode on your landrover. Well I’ve done it this time. The RRC needs it’s simple service, filters, oil and plugs. That was 2 weeks ago and whilst scrambling about underneath, the guaranteed cut finger syndrome showed itself again. A tiny wee cut that I thought nothing of and no big deal. Hmmmm ! That’s what I thought, until it grew bigger and bigger and I had to accept defeat and drag myself off to A&E. “ I’ll be back in a few hrs girls, with a plaster on “ So I drove myself to the hospital in the 110. Oooooof ! That was Monday and I’m still here, in fact, transferred to a second hospital that specialises in plastic surgery. This tiny cut combined with ones stubbornness in “ I’ll go tomorrow darling “ has ended up with infection spreading through the hand and arm and almost loosing the finger. I’m properly gooosed now after emergency surgery to save the finger and a cut from the end of the finger to the palm of hand to clean the infection out. Happy new year to me eh, stuck at home for months on end now. At least the RRC is running well ha ! I’m being let out tomorrow and yes, I’ll be driving the 110 back home. That’s if it starts Keith Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

That's bad that! I have a piece of metal from my exhaust from the metro go into my eye, I had to get that removed. My eye kept watering all the time.
No nasty injuries though from the defender, as I recon that would kill me!! Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

I still have a scar at the base of my thumb from a deep cut I got from a retaining clip whilst replacing brake pads on a Subaru Turbo over 20 years ago!
Lesson to all of us, keep cuts clean & covered & listen to the Mrs! |

Ouch! Here's to a speedy recovery
No specific Land Rover injuries to speak of. A related injury, whilst building the car port to put the Defender in I was rushing to install some shuttering before some friends came round. My chop saw is quite old and the spring which raises the blade after cutting sticks a bit leaving the blade exposed. Right hand index finger copped it. How I didn't cut it off I don't know? Two years latter, the scar still gives me trouble, but I have all five digits on that hand and they all move as they should so I am very lucky. Our friends came round and sat on their own in our lounge whilst me and the current Mrs Rashers sat in A&E all evening. |

Ouch!
Wrecked my knuckles and have a bit of the pillar from fitting the snorkel embedded in my palm. There was a rumour that somebody smashed their knee in driving a wmik into a wading pit with the clutch down, and I know a guy who got hit by an IED running top cover in a snatch and another who smashed his face in on the top mounted weapon on a wmik, whether it was a GMG or HMG I don’t know. Dropped a Lightweight on my thumb when the jack tipped over - and the handle rolled away across the floor..
The trackrod was crushing my thumb which was taking the entire weight of the front end of the LTWT. Thirteen stitches and two days in hospital. Two metal screws and a long metal pin are still in my thumb, holding it together. Couldn't drive for a while. On the way back from the fracture clinic a few days later, the first wife asked for a divorce. So it wasn't all bad...... |

Wow Keith that looks nasty, glad your on the mend.
Now i know i am gonna be shot down in flames and branded a big southern jessie, but i do all the work on the defender and Range Rover and i swear by wearing gloves. They have come alongway since the old builders ones. The soft rubber grip ones with mesh backs make life sooooo much more comfortable and if its really messy the nitirle ones now dont tear every 5 seconds. Be Gentle with me! Im just a humble home mechanic. |

^^^^^^^ This. I've only recently found those 'assembly gloves' in one of my local industrial supplies places - £1.50/pair or thereabouts. Thicker gloves were always a pain, and ended up more off than on.
Keith - that looks nasty. Not LR specifically, but I was once working on the heating valve on the old mini. My thumb slipped, and I ended up with the control wire stuck into my thumb. Sore, but 'no biggy' I thought. Next day my hand was sore, day after it got to my elbow.... Off to A&E myself. But I just ended up with antibiotics and an arm in a sling for a few days. So now I'm a bit more careful, but probably still not as much as I should be. Get well soon!
