"Range Rover owners are apparently more likely to be hit with software issues with their infotainment systems. Twenty-one per cent of Velar owners and 17 per cent of Range Rover Sport owners said they had issues with the on-board software, compared with an average fault rate of 5.36 per cent for all cars up to three years old.
Land Rover said that the Which? survey didn’t represent the vast majority of its owners’ experiences but added that it was introducing over-the-air updates to allow changes to on-board systems." I’m not sure where they get that from, all LR vehicles have incontrol touch pro and are suffering with similar issues. It’s an atrocious system. My Velar has had no end of software issues, I’m expecting a few tomorrow as I’ve left it doing an over the air update tonight

I would certainly hope so. I suppose it will cease to be an issue anyway when the SIM card’s 12 months runs out as I certainly won’t be renewing it since I can’t see what benefit it really provides. |

could be wrong I think the defender is dual sim, one for the customer that they will need to keep topped up then a LR maintained e sim to keep the OTA connection going regardless if the customer doesn't stay connected. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

There's a fair bit of confusion in the online marketing of the various online offerings and seemingly also amongst owners if you look at the posts on WiFi access and the like.
It has dual SIM capability but some vehicles seem to ship without a 2nd port if the additional data package (not SOTA) is not optioned or possibly if the fridge is optioned? JLR have indicated that SOTA would become a revenue generator for them, so I think someone has to pay for it long term. |

sounds about right, for the manufacturer link I would have thought they would utilise e sim rather than physical so it can activate and bind to whatever network is used in the country it travels through. LR would then manage a corporate data plan for it. 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE

From reading this article, it would appear that JLR have split out some functionality that was originally built into the two eSIM system: " One modem, along with eSIM in the Pivi Pro system, looks after in-car entertainment. Meanwhile, another modem in the Vehicle Domain Controller looks after SOTA downloads, telematics for e-call, b-call and stolen vehicle tracking, plus remote interaction to precondition your vehicle." and either the Pivi Pro has been changed to a physical SIM, or there's now an additional SIM required to create a vehicle hotspot. |

Just had our first trip out with the caravan and new Defender, 5 days in Hutton-le-Hole in the North York moors national park.
The Defender was excellent with no issues at all. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

I think I live in a parallel world minus all this double dutch tech talk...am I alone in being unable to decipher new era Land Rover technical talk? I'm off on a trip in the Defender today...not sure whether to listen Radio 5 or Radio 4, that's the extent of my technical conundrums!!! Oh my, I feel so old...but HAPPY!!!!! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains |

Thanks. I'm struggling to see why there needs to be a separate and costly SIM for SOTA and associated services, when a single owner supplied SIM could do the lot at a commercially available, and much lower cost. Well apart from the obvious revenue stream for JLR. |

I presume the SOTA updates would be done over home WiFi when parked up anyway, rather than over a cellular network when out and about.
Updates to navigation etc. doesn’t bother me, Google Maps or Waze both do all that for free. As for the other ‘remote connectivity features’ - a clever gimmick but limited practical applications in the real world. |

I think it’s better like that owners change their sims and data plans I know some who simply let it run out and never top it up which would sever the SOTA connection. Having a dedicated link controlled by landrover ensures connectivity to upload critical updates and fixes. Owners with no data would need the dealers to do it which would be costly. Corporate mobile data will cheap and E sims easy to manage and cheap. Dies of course bring up the end of life conundrum will they stop updates on cars over 3 years old? 110 MY23.5 X Dynamic HSE
