Just out of interest I looked up the value of the money I paid for my Disco when I bought it new in 2002 in today's terms. I paid a tad under £30k in 2002, which in today's money is apparently £48k, a bit of an eye-opener. So the vehicle I specced up to be equivalent is around £24,000 more than the Disco in real terms. |

Some fantastic posts today. Grenadier nd Black Wolf
Here's my take on today's big event having played with the configurator and soaked up the marketing hype. The #NewDefender will sit perfectly in the spotless, futuristic, new showrooms that Land Rover are now demanding of their dealerships. I pay a visit to my nearest toy shop a couple of months from now and the only issue is what product to buy, RR, RRS, D5, NEW DEFENDER, EVOQUE or DS. A friendly salesman wanders over and I explain i'm looking to retire my Defender 110 Utility. 'Sorry sir, you need to go down the road, Mitsubishi or Toyota can assist' The Salesman has been well trained by JLR and politely will not waste any time on me. I return home and sit at my laptop musing how have I been deserted by my go to brand for a company work horse as I skip through the web pages looking at JLR's new toy. All I can see is images of a vehicle that has been over designed, over specced, over priced and a million miles from the original Icon. The LR Series III evolved into the RR and created a new genre of vehicle, and now a RR has evolved back into a Defender. I genuinely hope #NewDefender is a success for the well being of the brand and it's employees, but I have serous concerns that it has ditched it's core and surrendered to the marketers, celebs and accountants. Has JLR just jumped over the shark? Paul Pondering a New 90 Commercial 2020 Evoque * 2014 110 SW JE Stage 2. *2010 110 Utility. If I was spending that much money on an suv with questionable styling, think I'd be more excited by the innovations on this one:

I wonder if the SAS can see themselves pounding across some desert in the new Defender - even a roughed-up version?

I'd be more inclined to get the views of the Taliban. The canvas roof has potential but I fear that their Toyota special fixing tool (hammer) wont do any of the 85 ECU's any good.....

A friend saw a new Hilux version last week, though wasn’t allowed to take pics. They weren’t impressed with his Taliban comment. |

I am now going to sell this 35 year old piece of ugly Land Rover junk and buy a new Defender, because I want a better infotainment system and cameras all round.

Finally had a chance to digest all of the pictures, video, build configurator etc etc after work!
I really do love it. Actually it exceeds all expectations! Except for the stupid square panel on the rear side windows. I agree with all comments that this is probably what the Discovery should have become, but now they're calling it a Defender, hey ho that's fine by me. I know what an 'original' Defender looks like and so does everyone else! I have a feeling this design will comfortably stand the test of time and will be looked on as many do with the Disco 3/4 shape now. I should take a screenshot of this post so I can see whether I'm right or wrong in 15 years time Interior looks great. Durable, rugged, simple. Too much tech I suspect and reliability on this could be 'interesting'. Can I afford it? No, not by a long way. The comments about the reaction to it being poor, I have to say all my family/friends who I've spoken to about it today, the majority love it. Online reaction/reviews so far seem positive and feedback on other forums I visit (Farming Forum, Pistonheads) also generally seems good. |

I’m disappointed that it’s so bland. Surely with a blank canvas they could have come up with something more inspiring - especially when they had such an iconic predecessor to draw inspiration from. The first flush of new LR designs were pretty good; Disco 4, RRS, FFRR and Evoke but they’ve not really moved on and are ending up with a load of ‘samey’ vehicles.
Surely it can only help our Defenders keep their value. I can’t see anyone buying the new Defender for the styling, and with the price I can’t see a rush of original Defender trade ins depressing the 2nd hand market 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey 2003 D2 Td5 Black [SOLD] |

I kind of like it in a way, it’s going to be like the discovery for me I think, hated it when it first came out but soon grew to like it. It’s the first editions no doubt they will get better in a few models time 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8

I think the name on the bonnet gives it away! Move with the times, back in the day people didn't want the horse and cart replacing. It also features lots of "verticality", which apparently is all the rage at the moment, and has sharp edges at the back which are good for aerodynamics. Very contemporary! |
