I believe the pinion bearings are set up with shims , hence play means the bearings are probably kaput so a rebuild or replacement is on the cards DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

You can check if the inputshaft nut is still tight. If so it probably would be better to take the diff oout and check the whole diff. Play etc.

IIRC if the bearings are shot the diff has to come out for access to the bearing.

Yeah it's lateral movement. Had a horrible feeling it would be a replacement 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

I'd just get a new seal, replace it and tighten up or get it done.
Then see how it goes, if it still gets lose or leaks again, get it out. I've had mine repaired on the rear multiple times, not particularly loose but leaking. The seal keeps going, the pinion has been changed as well and still does it around every 20k so far. There never seems a plausible reason for it, unless it's due to prop angle on the rear on the Puma with there transfer box nose down to the front. ^^^ Next time mike up the part of the flange the seal runs on at several points across its diameter. I have found quite a few which have been sigificantly out of round which will cause premature seal failure.
