That would be a scary bill! And one of the reason we went for a Defender over new more sophisticated models. I'm not sure if there is any sense in that or just man maths. James

........... problem, with folk waiting until the light comes on to book it in, rather than listen for the odd knock / wheeze / clunk and do something about it..........
I mostly agree but listening out for the above would mean you'd never get off the dealers forecourt |

Here virtually nobody will hang on to a modern RR beyond the max extended warranty period, which is 6 years. They will all be replaced latest by that time. Pretty easy to understand the logic for that.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

By which time they will have negligible residual value for precisely these reasons.

Sometimes cars just have catastrophic malfunctions.
I read some bloke broke his back going over a speed bump in a brand new car by an undisclosed manufacturer. He won a compensation against the undisclosed manufacturer of the car, the OE shock manufacturer, and got money for signing an NDA. Got a two six figure payouts. The chances of a shock not passing Quality control were something like 1 in 6000, and the chances that it would fail the manufacturers were similar odds. Meaning the chances of getting one shock absorber was 1 in 36 million or so, and the chances of getting 4 through the first quality control were 1 in 1,296,000,000,000,000 (quadrillion) as was the second The chances of getting for were 1 in 1.679616e30 or (1,679,616,000,000,000,000,000,136,376,392) which is a nonillion... On another note one of the fleet cars users focus had a service. No oil and no water... thought it sounded like a transit. Caterham, you joke about not getting off the forecourt, but I’ve heard a first hand account of a brand new TD5 being picked up and the engine running on and going bang.........whilst still in the dealership! The building filled with smoke and people thought a bomb had gone off.
On the upside, the engine was replaced and the vehicle is still going strong! |

I like your P38 man-maths Huttopia, because it is good.
But this is better. Click image to enlarge |

That is v nice Slidey, a thing of beauty!
I’d definitely like a classic, an early 4 door would be my ideal one, but I can’t afford a divorce! There is a lot of love in the family for the Heritage ( not allowed to sell it, wife and kids vetoed that idea), the 90 pick up is my every day driver, station hack, shoot vehicle and vaguely useful for jobs on the farm, but the P38 is at best tolerated by the other inhabitants. It is my favourite by some margin, but I’m happy to be the odd one out! 😁 |

the reason why most stuff goes boom now, is how its put together. Things are rushed and cheap used if they can get a way with it. This is not land rover etc, its the manufacture's they use to make the odds and sods for the car. All this to make a few quid profit, the last end customer who buys it. Things are just shoved in during assembly, it runs etc then off to the customer. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |
