This was discussed a couple of weeks ago and the consensus was that unless you're a very good welder, you won't get the penetration needed to make a decent job of it.
I've just fitted genuine one piece shafts to mine and they have made a real difference. I did manage to pick them up for a very good price, though. Cheers, I have a good mate that is a coded tig welder, so comfortable getting the quality. I guess my other concern is that this is essentially the sacrificial part, so if I make it solid am I not going to make the diff end the sacrificial section?

No. It's only sacrificial because it's not lubricated, which doesn't apply at the other end. Darren
