Drove a customer’s 2013 Wrangler today. Good grief the steering is sh*te on these, l thought the Defender was a bit wayward when l got it (fitting new swivels transformed it though)
But the Jeep is all over the place on the motorway requiring constant steering correction to keep it in lane. I had a look online and it’s a common complaint even on new ones, and there’s things you can do to improve it, but it makes the Defender feel more together that’s for sure. It hasn’t put me off the Jeep but if l ever bought one it would need to be fixed. Or maybe you just get used to it. My friend says it’s “fine, never had a problem with it” Apparently they are very sensitive to the correct tyre pressure. |

They'll always be different in character, funny how Jeep keeps it heritage and LR bins it.
LR was not what it used to be after Ford sold up. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

It didn’t put me off the Jeep, it was really nice in other ways and performance was good.
I won’t be changing my Defender for one, but it will be a consideration when the/if the time does come to change. |

Discoverys have smaller tyres as standard though, which reduces the overall ratio. Darren

My TD5 Disco has no trouble towing 3.5 tons and is on 265/75x16 tyres.
I once towed 120 tons with it, but that's a different story. |

The TD5 in the Discovery was also more powerful than that in the Defender in standard tune. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

True, it was. I am not sure by how much, though.
The TDCi is in my opinion a much better towing vehicle for heavy work due to the massive bottom end torque and the fantastic 1st gear. The complete lack of bottom end torque is the greatest disappointment of the standard TD5. |

About 14hp, so a bit over 10% more powerful than the equivalent Defender. Darren

Fitting a Disco transfer box is one solution but on the one l tried l found first gear and particularly reverse gear a bit tall. I had to use low range to avoid slipping the clutch in reverse.
The Defender was remapped so once moving it was pretty good, quieter at 70mph than mine although the wind noise etc was the same and l still ended up sitting at 65mph. I’d like to fit a Roamerdrive to mine but what’s stopping me saving up the £2,000 for one is the fear of theft, l don’t want to spend thousands on the Defender only for some scum bag to nick it and then l have to start all over again. It was one reason l considered the Wrangler, best of both worlds, similar to a Defender but better on the motorway and doesn’t get nicked! But l love my Defender too much to get rid of it! |
