normal approach to the clutch is to take the gearbox out from underneath, and whilst it is out replace the gearbox output shaft. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I've just changed my clutch. I took the gearbox out from underneath, however, I had access to a two post ramp and two transmission jack's. She is a big old lump with the transfer box on the back.
Do you have access to any garage equipment? |

I’ve got most things and may have a 4 post lift in about 2 weeks. It’s from they guy who I bought the Def from he’s finishing off a pro resto job before selling off the lift and we agreed 1st option for me. It’s a strange one tbh...manual job with the 4 corners being done individual with industrial size hi-lift jacks. Wasn’t sure about it but seen pictures with Landy on it...rated to 2.5 tonne. Reserving judgement until seen unloaded and had a proper go and settled on a price. Will make dropping things from underneath a whole lot easier.

Someone may come along that has taken the engine out and thinks it's easier.
I have never done it and therefore can only comment on gearbox removal underneath. You could remove transfer box first and then remove gearbox to reduce weight and as lr90 suggests above, replace the common adaptor shaft. |

Slightly different, but we done the clutch on my series 3 by removing the floorboards, tunnel and seatbox. Then an engine hoist in through the door and lower it down. That was on a motor that had no fitted carpets, floor coverings etc so might be a lot of hassle in a modern Puma.

Gearbox out, Tdci is actually less work than a Tdi/Td5- personally I’d rather do Tdci clutches all day long than Tdi or Td5

Having recently removed the engine from a puma and removed the transmission from another.
Remove transfer case first then gearbox. Renew output adapted and fit clutch using new slave cylinder as well. I would look at doing the pilot bearing as both of mine are worn @100,000 km. I am fitting a new Clutch fix clutch and slave cylinder inc pilot bearing. The amount of work to remove the engine far out ways that of the gearbox. These engines are a mass of coolant hoses. Mark |

Yep buy the pilot bearing as 9 times out of 10 it’s goosed!

The kit i’ve Got is clutchfix so good to find out here they seem rated. I’ve not opened the box to see if there is a PB in there...if not i’ll get that ordered. Seems replacing the slave is the thing to do, is that because it just sensible or non-reusable part on the job?
Think I’ve decided on going at it from underneath following the advice here. I’ll save the engine out for another day.... |

We buy the odd one or two clutches from Clutchfix and send them around the world.
