With that choose I would go for steel with 255 M/T
My logic being if you bend a steel rim at least you stand half a chance of beating it back into shape. 255/85 gives a bigger footprint and a larger diameter tyre hence slightly better ground clearance, ok not much but every bit counts. Brendan |

We run 255/85/16 BFG M/T on two of our vehicles running on standard suspension without issues.

On current Discovery 2 I use 235/85/R16 BFG AT for travelling to Albania and around. For 130 I have 255/85/R16 BFG MT KM2 on Wolf wheels.
ATs are for us enough, as we are traveling mostly alone, so I must be very careful, not to get stuck. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

Confused, are you wanting to put the wolfs on the trailer, or the 110?, if trailer, what size tyres on 110

What I mean is, nest keep ALL wheels tyres the same size, for interchangability

what trailer?
i used to run wolf rims with 255.85s on std Puma 110 suspension. there was slight rubbing at full cross axle on the rear when loaded but it was only the tyre edge catching the inner lip of the mud arch. two mins with a knife to cut the arch out and no more rubbing. General consensus seems to be Wolfs with the 255's. Some additional thoughts: - What about blackwolf's comment on availability? - What about winter/snow capability of the BF muds? Or should I keep saving and go for Blindo's Not easy... |

MT or AT in winter - never more. Good in deep snow, but big problem to brake or turn on ice or compacted snow. For me only proper winter tires.
On the other side, last winter we had snow only for 1-2 weeks, but few years ago it was 3 month. With MT in real winter it is fun, but only straight, also in street crossings - only straight. I run 255/85 KM2s and find that they are good and most things except ice and hard compacted snow, where you have to moderate your driving style (but you would do this with any tyre, wouldn't you?). I am told that the AT KO2 is markedly better in snow and ice than the KM2, and is probably somewhat better in all tarmac conditions, but it is not as capable off-road, although not bad.
My biggest dilemma is that the the 255/85 size, which I think is the optimal size for a Defender, seems to have fallen from favour. The KO2 is not available in this size, and the KM3 will not be available in this size apparently. I have no idea how long the 255/85 KM2 will remain available, but looking at US forums it already seems to be hard to find. I can't decide whether to stock up with KM2s now, change to 235/85, or change manufacturer! I like the KM2s a great deal (apart from the irregular wear, which I can live with) and don't really want to change. but equally I like the size. It would be so much easier if BFG kept the size alive! |
