Hopefully someone can help, I've recently bought a very very old table saw that's been fitted at some stage with a 2.2kW single phase motor.
Initially after I removed the 2.5 twin and earth, chocolate blocks and twisted bits of bodge and fitted a new flex and did a bench run of the motor it worked fine, I then assembled it to the frame and it doesn't run properly, in fact it runs backwards at about 20% of its speed. If you spin the motor the correct way and then apply the power it works properly. There are three capacitors fitted, firstly a 200uF connected on its own and two 12uF capacitors wired in parallel. I've checked all the connections are clean and tight. Does anyone know or is there a way to find out which capacitor is faulty? Cheers Keith |

I would guess that the 200uF would be the start capacitor and the pair of 12uF would be the run capacitors, with a centrifugal (eugh, it's just momentum) switch to change over between start and run.
Which would point the finger of guilt at the 200uF cap. Do any of them look dodgy? As blackwolf says, it's possible there is some bodgery going on and if that is the case then scrap the capacitors and buy a variable speed drive, it's a much better way of doing it. |

There has been masses of bodgery done, guards were held on with bits of welding wire and such, but its a really solid piece of kit, tagged BSA and I'm guessing 1920-30's. Motor is modern by comparison, I've just pulled the data plate off the motor and it reads Hawker Sidderley Compton ED100L 220-240 / 460-480 volt single phase does this shed any possible light? Are you sure about the data plate info?
Any other info on there that might give us some clues? |

The data plate is very faded, only the stamped info is clear.
Info as follows: ED100L 2/354280 - I'm guessing model and serial number 2.2 - again kW? 220-240 / 460-480 dual voltage? 15/7.5 - amperage depending on voltage seems to make sense 50 - Hz? CMR - I have no idea B - ditto 436P - ditto Any ideas gratefully received! |

That sounds perfectly plausible for a data plate, you've got the 230V single phase and 460V split phase options with no 400V three phase option (which you wouldn't have for a single phase motor that needs capacitors).
That size of three phase motor it would be obvious from the plate and it would list 230 and 400V options. Most motors do have two voltage ratings and there will be some jumper bars to select how the windings are configured. |

Gents - Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I've never got round to getting the saw bench running and will soon need to machine some timber.
I fitted new capacitors to no avail, so had a paddy, disconnected everything, carefully noted all the connections and photographed the wiring & 12 months later have mislaid everything! The motor has 4 identical pairs of wires coming out of it. Two are to the inertia switch, which appears now to be working after a little fettling. two are labelled A2 with an approx. resistance of 2 Ohms two are labelled A4 again at about 2 Ohms the final pair are labelled A3 with a 6 Ohm resistance. The starting capacitor is rated at 200 MFD the pair of running capacitors are 12 UF I am guessing the A3 is the starter winding A2 & A4 are the run windings. I've spent hours trawling YouTube and Pinterest for a simple circuit diagram - can anyone assist? Cheers Keith |

Ok gents (and ladies), I'm still struggling with this one!
I've found a couple of generic diagrams for cap start / cap run 2 pole motors and can now make the motor run, but as its strapped to the bench with a ratchet strap (the saw bench is waiting in France) its difficult to judge speed & torque. I've wired the 4 poles in parrallel - is this correct or should they be in series? Cheers Keith |
