I am thinking about fitting a Warrier Spartan 12,000lbs winch to my 110 DCPU. Can anyone advise if this will be ok for light use? Are there any other types I should be considering? The price of this one is ok for me at 300quid so don't want to be going much more than this.
Any help much appreciated and advice on any additional items I should go for?? Thanks in advance. https://www.electricwinchshop.co.uk/warrior-spartan-12000.html |

Thanks for that. Looks a good winch but over what I am looking to spend I’m afraid. It’s nit going to get a lot of use (hopefully) so trying to keep the price down but still have a half decent winch. Hopefully someone in here has experience of this model and can comment??

I plan to get a winch later in the year, which will be a complete toy that I intend to make rear demountable. Anyway, I've been looking around for something suitable and came across this one that I'm quite taken with:

Thanks for that, those look good spec. for the money! I don't want a synthetic rope and will be using cable, they seem to do them and are cheaper in cable. I just need to see if I can find any reviews on them. Shame they are bright Orange though I could always paint in black I suppose Thanks for that. |

Have a good chat with Chris at the E,lectric Winch Shop in Bradford. Very knowledgeable and they do a range of different winch brands. He will be able to tell you about availability of spares, waterproofness of the different winches etc.
They ship winches around the world, also have a look at their website. Brendan |

Heh, heh, I quite like orange Why do you specifically want cable, just out of interest? Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Good question haha.
I am old school I guess and work in the fire & rescue service. I have used ropes all my life, climbing, confined space rescue, high angle etc. I fully appreciate the strength involved in new modern ropes used on the winches, however I cannot get my head round the fact that some idiot could very easily draw a blade or sharp object over the surface of the rope when on the winch and the first you know about it is when it goes bang during use. To me it must surely be so much easier to damage the nylon rope than a steel cable? Appreciate there is a massive weight saving but the steel must surely be more robust over time? mud and crap getting forced into the fibres over the years must have an effect?? I know nothing about winches and maybe someone will come along and say the above is nonsense? Re Orange! Nah to much on the front of Stornaway Grey I think...................but I haven't ruled it out just yet |

^^^^^ Nonsense. Coming from the water faeries I can't believe you would not check your ropes for cuts and damage before use.
Synthetic rope has 3 main advantages over steel cable, It's lighter and so easier to handle, it's much more flexible (a kink in your steel rope is very easy to do and will weaken the cable significantly ) and from a safety point of view it doesn't store energy within itself which means that if it does break it won't whip like the ends of a steel cable. Yes it is less robust and more susceptible to cuts so you have to look after it, clean it, make it doesn't cut through the ground under load and inspect it regularly. Use sleeving on it to protect against abrasion. This all, of course, assumes that you are going to use it. If it is just going to be eye candy for your Land Rover then leave the steel rope on it and just buy a winch that you like the colour of 😉 Just remember if you use it you will be liable for anything that goes wrong 😊 HTH Mo The Land Rover 90 - Many are called, few are chosen. 50 Shades of Pennine Grey |

Lol long time since I’ve heard water fairies! Hope this isn’t from a donut muncher??
You got me. It’s all about the colour truth is it won’t get a lot of use as I tend to avoid areas where I will get stuck. But having been stuck a few times and having the walk of shame to the farmer for a tow out with his tractor, I’ve opted for a winch. I think for my use the cable is the better option. So I will stick with that but I appreciate your comments. |

Don't forget also that a synthetic rope can melt if used on a winch with epicyclic gearing and a brake inside the drum (eg XD9000 and most cheap winches) if used for paying out under load.
Most people with synthetic ropes seem to be highly intolerant of those who prefer steel. Steel may be old-school but it does the job just fine and has done for years, and some prefer its advantages and feel they outweigh those of synthetic rope. |
