Oh the shame I am surprised you managed to admit that on a public forum |

I recently completed a BORDA winch training course and, on the day, we had two vehicles with synthetic and one with steel cable. It was immediately obvious how much more convenient and easy to use the synthetic ropes were. We talked about the pro's and con's of the two types and concluded that whilst there's a place for steel cable in some applications, for the vast majority of vehicle uses synthetic rope is the better choice.
For my use, I want the winch to be demountable and hence as light as possible, so it'll have to be synthetic. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Hi thanks for that Chris much appreciated. I have looked at his winches and they do look good, however all way above what I can justify on one. I have the bumper to fit next week, and was hoping to have it fitted for coming up actually. I am swaying towards the Warrier as it ticks all the boxes for me, its not going to see a lot of action so I reckon I will go that route. I am sure there are many other things I will be asking you about when I am up!! Thanks and see you on the 13th |

You will pay more for a goowinch but it will last a lot longer with little use than anything else. We see a great deal of our customers with other brands on driving days, after a year or so 90% are not working, usually through lack of use and then they switch to a tds.
Warn are good but spares are £££ You get what you pay for with winches. I have used most types competing for 15years or so and teaching in last 10yrs. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Well I headed the advice and went for the synthetic rope! Bit of a guddle fitting it due to the steering guard touching the new bumper, which was a pain! After a mate grinding it off and his electrical skills in wiring it up it’s all good to go now went for the Warrier Spartan 12,000lb in the end and very happy with the result! |

Looks a very nice set up ,When I ran a recovery firm 10 years ago we had wire on the lorry's because it took more wear and tear and damage was easy to see and synthetic rope on the Land Rovers,Having seen wire rope break in use I would now only use synthetic rope ,but it far from idiot proof which why even today recovery firms still use wire.
Synthetic rope in use on a Dave Bowyer Superwinch ,I think the synthetic rope was called bowline at the time ! |
