I think that's a tricky one. You can cut it out, but you need to ba careful not to let the swarf into the cooling system.

If it was me I'd take the thermostat out first, then fill the housing with a rag, or paper towels, then cut it out carefully.

But the main reason I thought I'd post was to say 'be careful' of the brass plug. I fitted on a while ago, and trying to get it off recently was a real pain. I think it had to be cut off too. Donald

If the housing's off it's easy enough. Just be careful then that you don't cut into the threads in the housing. Donald

Hi just found this thread. I'm in the same boat!

Is the housing easy to get off?

The plastic plug seems to have been glued in. The only way I can see to get the stuck residue out is to remove the housing entirely and melt the crap out with a blow torch.

In the end I just bought a new housing and put a brass plug in it was worth it as it makes bleeding the cooling system a doddle (very important with thec300 tdi) best of luck simon WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG

And just to add to that, the housing "shouldn't" be hard to get off - but it's possible.

From memory it's the two bottom nuts that are the most awkward to access, but the top bolts go into the head and could gunk up.

And, having slagged off the brass plugs in an earlier post, the current one has been in for a few years and is behaving very well. Donald
