Easiest way is to use Tek Screws, far easier and far stronger than rivnuts.

The original LRover fittings on mine knocked through from outside, after i spent an hour cutting off the nut head with a dremel.
Used Rivnuts in original holes and purchased new stainless steel brackets to replace. Used plenty of Waxoyle on fitting and crossmember and stainless nuts. Lasted well with no further problems. |

I fitted new rear mud flaps, the rivet nut was missing on one side and damaged on the other. I managed to get a bolt into the box section and into the hole where the rivet nut had been which allowed me to fit the nut on the outside. It was a bit fiddly but worked. I think I fitted an M8 bolt I the box section. The actual flap I used M6 bolt and nut with penny washers.

As Balvaig, I knocked the old threaded insert into the chassis and fitted good quality replacements.
Incidentally a properly-set threaded insert will be stronger than any sort of thread-forming screw in material as thin as a Defender chassis. |

There's a hole in the front out rigger big enough to put your hand in. Just put a nut and bolt on it.
Better still, get the Gwyn Lewis kit and have mud flaps that actually stop mud! Decent steel pop rivets should be strong enough to resecure the Rear ones. |

Thanks everyone.
I had not seen Rivnuts before. They look like a godsend all beit a bit more fiddly than Tek screws so that's the route I will go, funnily enough the video on youtube on how to use them without a special tool starts out on a Defender! Grouse2 |

If you have not used Rivnuts before practice with one on a scrap bit of metal. You will then get the feel of how tight they need to be and how they work. You will be surprised how strong they are.
For the mud flap you don't need the proper tool and the nut bolt and washer system works fine. |
