Horn. (Upgrade)
Can't quite remember if there is just the one or two?

Either way, is the a louder plug and play upgrade possible with a lower tone?

I know there are various other options like air horns etc and things like that but I'm. Pretty sure they all need an additional hard wired power feed to supply them due to a higher power draw.
Note really I interested in going that far and all the extra work and wiring involved.
And I also have in mind if the alarm ever went off too.

On mine it's okay, quite loud and a 'mid tone' horn to which you'd expect from a average car I guess but I'd like a lower tone and a bit louder.

Without much investigation on my part does anyone know what type of electrical connections it / they have as standard and what power draw they take?

I've heard of Stebel before, but it'd be useful to know what they actually sound like before you buy!
If I find something suitable it might be something I'll go for at a later date but only if I can use the standard set up.

Thoughts? No Guts, No Glory.

On my 2007 Puma there are 2 x horns.
I fitted two Stebhels to my Caterham & they certainly make people sit up when they get a blast.

So there is two then, I know there was one I saw the passenger side so I'd imagine the opposite too. Just between the indicator and sidelight IIRC.

So the Stebel horns are still getting a good rep then.
I think it's the 'Nautilus' style that is fitted as standard but I don think know the manufacturer. No Guts, No Glory.

Not sure what age defender you have but UK 200, 300 and TD5s all and one horn as standard... Not sure about Pumas...

My Defenders horn is really quite ignorable. A sort of "excuse me sir, would you mind ever so much"... Needs to be more purposeful...

Correct re position istr.
Can't think why they fit one either side instead of together.
The design is Nautilus- I got mine off a VW camper van site & they were red in colour.
Should be easy enough to find & just as effective as air horns without added weight/ size & plumbing

Geobloke - Mines a 2.4 Puma. I feel about the same as you regarding that, needs more presence!

Chopperone - It seems then if 200 - 300tdi & TD5 had singular and Pumas had two they went to that effort to add two and didn't actually really upgrade them.

I wonder if one is set up for alarm and the other for horn purposes.

Wait till the MOT test sheet. "Horn appears too loud for relative size of vehicle". Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Almost as good as the "You're sidesteps are too slippery, Sir". Comment someone had here's once on their MOT visit. No Guts, No Glory.

Yes, one high and one low.

Mine went in under warranty three times to fix either one or the other. When one wasn't working it sounded positively 'wet' and either squeaky or a bit mid-squeaky.... Phil

The horn on the defender I believe is the same as the Rover 100, you might get way with retro fitting the MGF horn. Looking at those they have the same connectors. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

My Td5 has two fitted as standard. Upgraded with PIAA horns bought on a group buy on here a while ago - nice easy upgrade. I had previously tried a set from Amazon - the make escapes me - but they were a bit squeaky.

Hello custom90steve

Mines also a 2.4 Puma, and swapping out the horns was one of the first jobs on my list.

Mine sounded worst than it should do, as I only had the high tone horn working, but a friend of mine
with a working set up, confirmed to me that even when OK, things could be better.

The standard set up is in my opinion not the best match for the Defender, and on the odd occasion it's used
you feel like driving off somewhere and hiding...it's got a touch of the 'postman pat' about it... Exclamation

Easy enough to upgrade, I also changed the connectors to work with my replacement set, salvaged from
Jaguar XJ12, (£10) not 'mad loud', but much lower in tone... and just sounds right now.

Are they about the same tone those? Eithway as you've got two you've got a similar set up to the Puma only they are opposite sides of the wing.
I didn't until the other day as discussed on here know they are dual tone though. No Guts, No Glory.
