One of the horns on my Puma has failed, I could take it in under warranty but I'm looking at upgrading the horns to something that will last a bit longer and be a bit louder.
Are the horns part of the alarm system? I quite like the sound of Stebel Nautilus. Looking on the website, the current draw is 18amps which I'm guessing is a bit to much to pull through the existing wiring for of the horns? The other option on the Stebel site are the TM80 Magnum which only have 6amp draw but are very close on sound output. What other horns have people used? I want to replace the existing horns and use the factory loom so current draw can't be to high. (Does anyone know the draw on the standard horn?) Cheers Yan |

I like the Nautilus, I have it on my motorbike and my RRS, not yet installed on the Defender.
Both installation with a relay, will be the same on the Defender, a bit more work but I think is better and safer. On the RRS I did not disconnect the original ones. |

My Mini has had air horns since about 2002, but i think the horn has a relay as standard.
If however you have one of the upgraded headlamp wiring harnesses, you can just pick up the battery feed from that harness and relay the horns in the same way the headlamp harnesses do. It's not that much more work. |

I have two tone air horns on my 90 and they are very loud, and a distinguishable tone too. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group

Where would you put the air tank and where would you fit the horn?

Nathan K5LA is what you really want! You don't need them however, but you want them! Trust me I've used them for years!

And this is what a K5LA sounds like.....
A mate has one fitted to his Western Star, no recording of it yet, sounds great in the tunnels. The videa has a great echo to it. |

Can anyone shed some light on the difference between:
https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/stebel-nautilus...-3356.html or https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/stebel-nautilus...-3364.html (Other than the price obviously) From what I can tell the main difference is the fundamental frequency with the truck horn operating at 300hz and the compact at 530hz If anybody has fitted one which one did you go with? Thanks Keith |

Just resurrecting this, as I am looking at upgrading the horn. 1994 300Tdi - just one horn, by the intercooler, passenger side.
After I had the wing off recently, everything worked perfectly on rebuild except the horn. It's probably just wiring, and the unit itself is OK, but like some of the replies above I've often felt it was a bit insignificant, and a poor match to the car. Seeing as I'll need to go back in and look at it all, the time might be right for a change. I don't really want to stop folks' pacemakers, or pretend it's a train, just something a bit more respectable. I looked at the two links in the post above - they seem respectable enough. Any thoughts, or any alternative suggestions since this thread was last on the go? Cheers D Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. I went with the 300hz one and then ran a new cable direct from the aux fuse box so that the existing cable operated the relay. Its a tight fit behind the light cluster but fitted in the end.
It's not ridiculously loud and does sound better than the stock one. Keith |

Whilst in the O/S front wing of mine recently I discovered a pair of air horns and a compressor. However, the horn is rather too polite. It turns out that the air horns aren't working, so that's another job for the list... There is a bank of ~6 empty after-market relay bases in the engine bay so those need further investigation. The clocks change this weekend so a productivity boost is pending
