Most likely one of the wheel boxes seizing up. Did you pull the rubber cover off the spindle before spraying with wd? Try spraying it a few times over the next few days. Ray

Yeah as above. Best try that first, else it's a dash out job!

Hi Grouse.
I had similar symptoms last year along with a reducing sweep of the wiper arm. Particularly the near side (r/h/d). On trying to move the arms by hand, it was obvious that the n/s wiper spindle was seizing. I removed the wiper arm and spindle rubber. Then replaced the spindle nut by a few turns, and locked a set of mole grips onto the nut. With the wipers on slow speed, I sprayed penetrating oil onto the spindle whilst 'manipulating the spindle up/down/left/right. Eventually it started to become more slack in its bushing. The o/s spindle was as new, and without much effort, you could feel a small amount of slack when pushing and pulling the spindle - think about 10-15 thou. With manipulation and oil, the n/s became the same. Be prepared to catch the rust streaked oil on the bonnet, and to take 10 mins or so doing this. This restored the arc of the wiper and the motor is significantly quieter meaning less strain. Think the manipulation of the spindle was instrumental in allowing the penetrating oil into the spindle bush and in washing out the rust. I had feared I was going to have to swap out a wheel box but so far its been fine ![]() Hope this helps |

Gentlemen, you are a fantastic bunch.
Not only have you saved my weekend (not having to take the dash out) but also my bacon as it was heavy snowfall on the way home tonight and I needed my wipers. I took your advice's and removed the rubber cover 3 times today and sprayed wd40 onto the spindle as directed. It has improved enough to allow me to drive, but I think a few more days treatment will have it making me dizzy with fast wiping! I'm thinking putting a dob of grease in the rubber cup thing to help prevent future episodes. Any reason not too? This community never fails to impress ![]() Grouse |

I've always sprayed acf-50 on the wiper spindles, never had a problem with them then

I've used Vaseline in the past as I do not think it damages the rubber. It seemed to work and prevented water getting in to rust the spindle.

This was one of the symptoms of the battery and alternator on mine on their way out

Vaseline is petrol based. It'll knacker rubber. But that depends if the spindle covers are actually rubber, if yours haven't fallen to bits then chances are they're some kind of plastic based material, or at least a very low rubber content. Silicone grease would be safer on rubber. |

Does anyone know the part number of the round rubber seals that cover the point where the spindle passes through the bulkhead. Mine are about to fall apart! Thanks.

I'm hoping mine isn't as Tommo's given the amount of brown 'tears' that stream out every application of WD.
This seems like yet another item to add to my maintenance schedule. I guess there's no such thing as just a drive n go Defender! Great tip re silicone grease, will go that route just in case and keep the Vaseline for the ol'chops ![]() Grouse |
