I’ve been reading so much information on the forum about switching off EGR and blanking the thing.

On the Puma, the blanking plate is just piece of mind once the EGR has been mapped closed. If the EGR is faulty it may work it’s way open or not be fully closed to begin with. If the EGR is healthy, no problem. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

In theory yes, you can just have it permanently closed in the map. But if it's all coked up it might not close properly and still leak gases.
EGR blanking plates are cheap and are easy enough to fit. Decent ones have slotted bolt holes so you can just loosen the EGR Valve and slide the plate in. |

Mine has been inhibited by my BAS map for the last 200,000 miles without a blanking plate with no problems whatsoever. I see no need whatsoever for a plate as well.

Sounds like you pretty much did yours from new Blackwolf, so the EGR would have been working properly to start with.
I blanked mine as it'd already done up to 80'000, so there was no guarantee it was closing properly. For the sake of 10 min with a spanner and £5 for a plate |

I took my map off temporarily and the valve stuck open giving me effectively limp mode 2 minutes in to a drive. All fixed now and I have the plate, but just need some spare time to install it.
So if you're splitting a joint there's no new gasket required on both sides of the plate?? I don't have my vehicle available but is it # 3, 4 or 5 ? Looking at it my guess is 3, but I'm not sure which direction the gas is flowing..

You can either blank it at 3 or 4, but 4 is easier to get at.
Some people blank both, in case the EGR cooler develops a coolant leak. I've never bothered with a second gasket, the plate is basically just a thick gasket anyway. If you wanted to add a second one, just clip the bolt holes into slots so you can slide it into place. |

Mine is CNC cut sheet steel, more like a shim than a gasket in terms of sealing ability...
Seems like it's a never discussed issue so I may have no concern but out of interest what would be the outcome if there was imperfect sealing? Not much? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Just read my initial post again, not sure why I suggested 3, I meant 4, it's right on the valve and not wedged behind the block. I can see how blocking both could help with an EGR cooler leak though
